Default xr4x4 2.9 change to rear wheel drive.

does anyone know the exact gearbox to bolt to a 2933cc v6 (xr4x4 - 1992) to change transmision to rear wheel drive only and save cutting current tunnel. been told xr4i type 9 and mt75 granada but i do not want a gearbox that does not do the job correctly. i was 100% sure i would put the mt75 4x4 transmision on a 3 door sierra rep but when seeing the condition of the shell, and several comments from forum users, i do not want to cut large areas out of the floor. i would like to keep the car in it's original shell to maybe change again someday. would also like to know if i need a different bell housing, clutch and prop. would rear axle off xr4x4 still be used. a lot of questions i know but this has sent me down a route i have no knowledge on. i have front hubs and rear axles off - standard 1.6 sierra, xr4x4 and also xr4i if this helps. many thanks.

You need a 2wd V6 MT75 box. Not easy to find one built by Ford. Or build one http://www.fordpower.org.uk/forum2/i...pic,895.0.html

You will need a Dohc Sierra front section of the rear prop and the gearbox mount. Take out the front drive shafts front the hub CV's and your done.
Or the V6 type 9 gear box will go in from either the capri or XR4i. The prop from the XR4i is also needed.

cheers robrs2. if the xr4i gearbox and prop will work then the standard xr4i mount should also fit the shell. i was told that any mt75 box may be too wide for the tunnel so if i was to use mt75 i would still need a different gearbox mount.thanks, it looks like it could be a simple exchange anyway, tony

You have a 92 car which is an mt75 4x4 box. The tunnel is therefore the widest. Who ever said it doesn't fit doesn't know much. It's only fitting a 4x4 gearbox to a none 4x4 shell that's a problem. You will need the dohc gear box mount for either box I believe. The xr4i shell has a different tunnel.

i think you misunderstand, the donor car is xr4x4 but i wanted to fit the running gear into a 1984 3 door which has a narrow tunnel. had the shell not been so good i would not have minded cutting out standard tunnel and replacing with xr4x4 but i think this may spoil a perfectly good shell. that is why i need to keep 2.9 engine but needed to know which gearbox would fit in the narrow tunnel. thanks anyway, it is good to know other users do try to help.

Depends on the year fit the 3door then. If it has the abs type bulkhead its a big tunnel if it's a servo one it's small. But the mt75 rwd v5 box should fit, but not sure.

thanks for reply, did you find any difference in the gearing and was mt75 any better than the type 9 from xr4i.
