Default How to Set Taper Wheel Bearings?

Hello,

Looking for a bit of advice please.

Real wheel bearing has gone on my Fiesta and when i took the Hub off I have found it has Tapered roller bearings.

I haven't changed/fitted this type of bearing before but have heard various methods of setting them.

Can anyone give any advice on best way to set them and what sort of torque the Rear Hub nut should be?

Appreciate any help,
thanks,
Dan

With the road wheel on. I just tightened the hub nut until all the play was gone, then turned them an extra 90*, then backed them off to the first available split pin hole.

but look at the factory reccomended setting as im a pikey

You don't want to do them up too tight, else you will burn the wheel bearing out, i usually do up hand tight and just "Nip" them with the spanner.

i normally tighten with water pump pliers.but use them end on if that makes sense.
the official way is tighten up then back off 1/8th of a turn.

Thanks for the help!

I've ordered a bearing kit so should have it in time for the weekend.

There wasn't a split pin throught the nut (in fact i'm not sure i remember a hole through the shaft for one....) so was a bit wary about how to make sure it's tight but not too slack that it would vibrate lose.

A friend had told me to fit the road wheel and spin it while tightening the hub nut, ever heard/used this method?

there will be a hole for the split pin and ffs make sure you fit one or you run a big risk of the nut coming off and everything else coming off with it!

as mentioned above tighten by hand, then a quick nip up with a spanner or socket (not too tight) then back it off slightly till you can get the split pin through the casalated nut cover, wheel on check for play if there is any nip it up a little more

Don't forget to pack them with grease before fitting.

Got the bearing done over the weekend, no "rumbling" on the way to work today.

There wasn't a split pin or a hole in the shaft for one but the Nut seemed to tighten futher done the shaft. Hidint have and calipers handy to measure it but it seemed as if the shaft was tapered.

Hopefully this is enough to hold the nut on!!

If it isn't a castellated nut and split pin arrangement, maybe it's a staked nut instead?

I can't believe nobody's even asked what model fiesta, if its not a split pin type, eg mk1 or 2, then its the type that needs to be bloody tight.

In the region of 235nm, but if the op can let me know what model then I can check when at work in the morning

MK2 Fiesta's DO have split pins as it's a hubbed drum,if you have a hub nut, that is what has to be tightened up to a specific torque, but that doesn't apply to these if just removing the drum.

yeah I worded that wrong, or could have worded it better. I mean't mk1 and 2 have split pins.

if its a mk3 onwards and the hub nut isn't torqued correctly its a accident waiting to happen

Hello,
It's the last of the Mk5's, a 52 reg.
It has drum brakes and has 2 Taper Roller bearings in them and i've been told these type of bearings aren't supposed to be tightened up like standard hub nut bearings?

235nm from memory, I will double check at work tomorrow.

Did you undo a 30mm nut to remove the drum?

as mentioned above now you say what model then yes it should be torqued, however ive never in my 15 years of being a mechanic actually torqued one of these types of nuts, just done them up with a gun and then nipped them with a bar and have never had any problems with them

Default Fiesta rear hub nuts

If it's the 30mm laminated nut made up of 3 separate thin nuts it's 235 Nm even though the bearings are classic taper roller. These nuts are very difficult to undo and do up as they are designed not to come undone and replace the old split pin and castellated nut system used for years. Both sides are RH thread.
