Hi, i've got a mondeo zetec yr 2000, bloody thing wont start, when i turn the key I hear a clicking noise, occasionally the engine starts to turn over but then stops and then the clicking comes back. After reading forums I've found out i need to check the battery and that's fine, also I replaced the starter motor with a brand new one so that's fine, I don't have any other ideas and the whole reason i replaced the starter motor myself is cos i don't want to pay garage costs, if anyone could help with any ideas on what could be wrong now its be appreciated?

have you tried jump starting it as it does sound like battery to me

 

hi, its definitely not the battery, i took it out and put it in a Rav4 and it started the Rav4 fine, then when i put it back in the Mondeo and it did the same clicks.

 

is it a mk2 or mk3 mondeo?

as in square front of round front?

if it's the mk3 then it may be the dmf failure and bits of it getting stuck in the starter motor

pull the starter out and see what falls out

 

Its mk2, round front, Its got a brand new starter motor inside because I originally thought it would be the starter motor, but after replacing the starter motor with a brand new one it still clicks.

 

remove the starter, see if it works out in the open

if so, can you turn the engine over by hand with a bar and socket?

 

Because the starters brand new i'd assume it worked fine? or am I being silly?
Also how do I turn engine over with bar and socket?

Defo sounds like a starter motor to me, doesnt mean it is though lol. immobiliser issue maybe ?

 

well its down to starter and yes new ones can be faulty if it was immobiliser then it wouldn't click

 

You sure there are good connections on the wiring to the starter and battery? Make sure all contacts and terminals are cleanand free of shit, clean them up with some emory paper or sand paper.

I had a similar situation once where the battery started another car but wouldn't start the problem car, so I removed the starter, that was fine, put it back on with a second battery and wouldn't start, turns out I had disturbed the wiring when I removed the starter motor.

 

hmmmm, ok i'll check all the wires and connections, anywhere special I need to look or just follow the wires both ways? the battery connectors are pukka clean but i'll follow it the other way, i did notice that the fan belt would move round maybe 1cm everytime it clicked, not sure if that means anything. i've seen x reg mk3's so it might have been an early one

 

Hi, I spent a lot of time today looking over the wires and checking connections and all the fuses again and everything else I could think of and none of it worked, so i thought i'd try jump starting it again and it bloody jump started!! it didn't do s thing the first time i tried it, i was gutted but also quite happy! So then I got kwik fit to test the battery and it came up that the alternator was perfect but the battery was trying to start the car with 67% power, so I had to get a new battery, £75! ouch! but at least the mondeo superstar is running again I do appreciate all your help people. many thanks
