Angry help! mk2 1.8lx mondeo problem with acceleration!

I really hope somebody has some suggestions! I have a mk2 mondeo 1.8 lx that has been nothing but trouble .I'm gonna try to explain what's happening with it the best I can lol! Lately, especially in the mornings the car has a total lack of power. It feels like its constantly in a high gear jumping and jerking when I accelerate. It does this intermittently then I get a burst of power back and it drives normal. The car is iddling ok and it revs smoothly in neutral. It's even doing this in first gear as I pull off. My husband has changed the coil pack, leads and fuel filter around a year ago and we have also added fuel flush to the tank.It had a new clutch about 18 mths ago also. Any suggestions are really appreciated I just hope its not the gearbox

Gearbox can't cause a lack of power, I assume this car is a manual.
The plugs could be tracking, especially if worse when cold ?, is the car on bosch plugs, had issues before with zetecs and bosch plugs, the leak(electrically speaking), take the plugs out and see if they have greyish colored streak marks up the procelain.

Thanks for the quick reply just told my hubby but he needs to get the right socket to get them out, gonna get one tomorrow and see. Not changed the plugs so he will have a look and see what condition there in. Someone on yahoo said it might be to do with the maf? Will this be the next thing to look at?
Sorry for the lack of knowledge lol

Sounds like it's killed another coilpack to me.

Yes they can, if the tolerances arent right. I'm speaking of freshly built gearboxes, not this particular case.

Coilpacks always fail, was it replaced for a genuine ford one or aftermarket? I would also stick a new set of plugs in, get genuine ford motorcraft ones as these are the best for the zetec engines, cheaper than other brands too!

could also be a clogged fuel filter?

Well if it isn't gonna be an easy one to sort then it looks like it might be going to the great scrapheap in the sky. It was really bad this morning and we live on a hill, it wouldnt get past 2500 revs in first gear and stalled on me! Managed to get up it eventually but was crawling off like a snail. It even had trouble starting aswell. Going to get the right socket today so hubby can check sparks, coil pack and fuel filter etc. It's mot runs out beg of Aug and it needs new rear callipers and power steering pipe as it is. The future is not bright for my little mondeo lol

Obviously if they are binding they can, but they don't bind then let go then bind then let go then bind then let go etc etc.

It won't be the MAF, mass air flow, this senses the flow of air into the engine, when they go duff they certainly cause issues, but not of a on off nature, it's entirely possible that it's eaten another coilpack, especially if the plugs are a bit old and knackered.
The NGK are ok in the zetec, but so are the ford ones.
The MAF can easily be cleaned with some carb cleaner, DON'T poke at the hot wire with anything though.
I'd invest in a haynes manual, if only to learn where bits are, settings etc.
After cleaning the maf if you do(it won't hurt anyway) reset the ECU, by pulling the violet colored 2 amp fuse from the fusebox hear the battery for a minute or two, this will put the ecu in re learning best settings mode, could be a bit lumpy for a few miles/days but soon learns the best settings your own engine likes.

Just an update guys. Sparks been checked and cleaned, in better condition than what we thought but gonna replace them anyway in a couple of days. The coil pack is fine, not black underneath and still in great condition. Checked maf hotwires and they don't look black or caked in Crap. So all that's left to check is the fuel filter. The car is still being a twt and I'm gonna drive it into a wall if it carries on (not recommended Lmao!)
Oh and to top it off we now have an airbag light that's flashing at us, the electrics are buggered and its not done it for ages just like the handbrake light which stays on and goes off as it pleases.

Handbrake light going on and off is your low brake fluid level warning, so would get that topped up!

I reckon it's the coilpack, there's only a couple of different ones across the whole ford range, you know of someone with a ford you could swap to eliminate it?

there isnt air in the fuel system is there? theres a pushbike style valve on the inlet somewhere, start it up, take the cap off it, stand out the way of it so its not in your face or near your face, and poke the valve so it sprays fuel out, when i changed the fuel filter on a mondeo it played up afterwards, i did this and it was fine after.

Could be coilpack, leads , or plugs, if its doing it under load then it would point to fuel or spark issue..

Thanks guys, the handbrake like stuck on a couple of years ago after a rear spring went. Done all the checks with regards that and it is purely electrical. ST24MK2 where is this valve? Hubby will check it tomorrow if he can find it.
