just told my hubby but he needs to get the right socket to get them out, gonna get one tomorrow and see. Not changed the plugs so he will have a look and see what condition there in. Someone on yahoo said it might be to do with the maf? Will this be the next thing to look at?

It won't be the MAF, mass air flow, this senses the flow of air into the engine, when they go duff they certainly cause issues, but not of a on off nature, it's entirely possible that it's eaten another coilpack, especially if the plugs are a bit old and knackered.
The NGK are ok in the zetec, but so are the ford ones.
The MAF can easily be cleaned with some carb cleaner, DON'T poke at the hot wire with anything though.
I'd invest in a haynes manual, if only to learn where bits are, settings etc.
After cleaning the maf if you do(it won't hurt anyway) reset the ECU, by pulling the violet colored 2 amp fuse from the fusebox hear the battery for a minute or two, this will put the ecu in re learning best settings mode, could be a bit lumpy for a few miles/days but soon learns the best settings your own engine likes.
