Default Jumpy Speedo needle on mk4 Escort

Read that this is usually the cable which causes the needle to fluctuate and bounce so replaced the cable but its still not sorted it.

Does anyone have any other suggestions what could cause it?

When im not on throttle the speedo needle drops right down, when i come on the gas it goes to nearish the speed but a bit bouncy

Have the numbers peeled off the dial face, this happens on mk4 escorts and causes many issues with sticky sluggish needle movement.

No their mint. I know what you mean tho. Most are like that in my local breakers.

Think i'll oil the speedo drive gears and see if that helps

It's normally worn diff bearings causing this, have a look under the car and see if you can 'rock' the inner drive shaft joints up/down, (try to rock both shafts at the same time) and see if there's any oil leaks from the drive shaft seals.
