Default RS Focus Mk1 - Engine Cuts Outs

Hi all,

When starting up the Rs when its cold, it idles lumpy for the first few minutes. Fires on a couple of cylinders for a while then brings in the third, then eventually the fourth. Then she runs fine all day. I presume this to be normal as its cold!?

However, lately, the RS isnt Idling properly, even when its warm. I pull up to a Junction, clutch in and...stall. All the time Im applying revs the engines running, as soon as I slow down or brake all power goes. Battery light comes on, and dead! So having to start the car again, and rev away at roundabouts and traffic lights!?

Anyone with any Ideas??

Cheers,

Toby

How old are the plugs, what are the plugs and what gap are they at? Does it have an aftermarket dump valve?

The car is totally standard, and the plugs are not that old, prob about 5 months. Havent looked into the gap of the plugs, they are just standard manufacturer spec NGK's.
Car has been running perfect for three years, It only used to do this when the temp outside was really cold or wet, but now doing it all the time.

Cheers

Few common problems that are easy, non-expensive fix for the RS are as follows...

1. Spark plugs
2. air idle control valve (AICV)
3. MAF sensor
4. Air leaks around hoses that split on the inlet manifold

Ok thanks, Ill look into the two sensors. Defo no leaks, its got new samco hoses fitted, and they are uber tight.

Cheers again.

You won't have Samco's on the smaller inlet pipes mate. If you look around the back of the engine and check out a few of them, I bet you'll find a split in at least one of them. Listen closely and blip the throttle now and again to hear any difference.

Alternatively, get a long piece of silicon hosing and use like a doctors stethoscope around the inlet to hear leaks
