Default I've messed up, need your help please

Removed and replaced my steering rack but made a little cock up, when pulling out the old rack i inadverntly pulled the whole steering shaft (steering wheel to rack) as well. Now i've fitted the new rack but am having problems with the following thingy, have a look at the pics please and then i'll carry on,

It fits onto the triangular shaft exiting the bulkhead, drivers footwell. What i need to know is if this thingy is supposed to fit into the hole in the bulkhead or just butt up against it.

Personnaly i feel that it does fit in as there's wear on the inner nylon thing but don't want to shove it in and cock things up further.

Please help this dumb shit out , thanks in advance

IIRC that is one of the shaft bearings and it would need to be fixed in the bulkhead to work m8 as it supports the shaft HTH

I checked mine out last night, and it appears to press into the firewall. I tried to pull it out, and is quite hard to. Therefore I think it is a press fit. The metal cover is just that, and that comes off quite easily. I tried to take some pictures. Hope this helps. Cheers John.

John, thankyou very much, you properly went out of your way, that is seriously appreciated. I'll be having a proper look at the weekend, those pics are very helpful.

Cheers

Hey, no problem. My engines out of the car at the moment, so the bulkhead is exposed. So I thought a few pictures might help. Although it’s LHD it will be the same as a RHD.

Cheers
John
