my xr4x4 2.8 colonge engine smoke alot and and strong smell of fumes its like a white smoke not blue i dont think its the head gasket as it uses no water i did a test by putting a white rag by the exhaust and know black marks on the rag could it be valve seals.

Oil can be white smoke, it is blue if it gets burnt in the combustion process, normally stem seals show if it's smokes on the over run, check the breathers clear also.

Coolant would be shown as steam.

Just noticed you say it smells of fuel in which case it could be running rich, this would be shown as black smoke.

For example if you are coasting down a hill in gear the engine speed would increase by road speed, that is over run, what happens is the vacuum pulls oil past the worn stem seals and into the combustion chambers, then when you accelerate this is then burn and thrown out the exhaust which would be shown as blue smoke.

thanks martin i think it may benifit if it had a tune up do you think this may solve the problem it has a mfi bosch k-jetronic system.

Yes as if your smelling fumes this suggests it to be a running problem, unless it is of course oil fumes, be sure to use someone who understands the Bosch/MFI system as many don't which will cause you more harm than good. I assume it is serviced regularly?

Default ford mondeo burning oil

hi there can anyone help

ford mondeo mk3 76k 53 reg 500miles driving a month, using 1 litre oil is this valve seals gone or o rings also spark plugs full with oil when i took them out is that rocker gasket gone any suggesiton will be much appreciated
