Default new t34 shaft?? pics inside

i bought a garrett external gate t34 57trim turbo and there was loads of play in the shaft...

i have stripped it down and looks like the shaft is worn?? he has a really small oil restrictor on there, around 1.5 - 2mm!! has it been starved of oil?? its a journal bearing.

can i get a new shaft for it? what happens about balancing?

cheers

It will need rebalancing best bet is to pop in the post to a turbo rebuilder with the correct kit.

if it is balanced before then it will be balanced after. your wheels dont need balancing every time you take them off. As long as you mark the nut, shaft and compressor housing, so that you can assemble it in the exact same place as it was before. Measure the shaft and see if its worn. Turbos are balanced outside the cartridge, dissassembled, then re-built inside the cartridge. so therefore why cant you take it out and re-asemble it yourself? It just needs to be kept inline thats all.

as long as the shaft is not too badly worn/scored and the wheels are not damaged, then you will get away with a re-build kit, providing you marked the turbo up before taking it appart! otherwise there will be no knowing the orientaton it should go back together. If your buying a new shaft it must come paired with a compressor wheel and nut i would think?

i would of marked it but i accidently moved the wheel while holding the other end so it moved!! AH

i'll try post a pic of the shaft but it was wobbling round in the cartridge before i stripped it. surely if its balanced out side the housing why would it matter where it goes?? surely if the wheels are balanced.

edit

the shaft looks ok but i will measure it, maybe the bearings are worn? look scored....would a smal restrictor cause premature bearing wear?

its balanced as a unit, similar to the way you can balance a crank, flyweel and clutch together, or the inside and outside of a wheel. So i always ensure they go together in the orentation the come appart. Ive done one before without lining them up, cos i did the exact thing you did first time round! put it back together, but you could clearly hear the turbo vibrating as it spooled at a set speed, and it smoked! Done several since with no hassle though.

ah ok, i got no worries getting it balanced! should of took more care but i thought the shaft had had it so...

is it likely the bearings have worn more?? the shaft is thinner in area's but i take it this is due to the balance??

pics..

there is daylight between the shaft and bearing, also the bearing wobbles on the shaft. before i stripped it, the wheels were nearly touching the housings!

checking the compressor wheel and housing, it has just touched causing a mark on the housing. is this bad?? basicly looks like a light scratch, the wheel looks fine just slightly worn the outer fins where it touched.

can i get away with it?? there not bent or broke.

At a minimum you wil have to polish the shaft in a lathe, then get two new bearings and a thrust washer, but these are supplied in a re build kit, you will need to replace the cast iron seals too mate
