My gear box is whining when in neutral and 1st and 2nd. no noise in other gears. I have only just changed it and I got it from atrusted braker in my area. There is oil in the box. castrol 75 90 fully synthetic. Isthis a lemon box or is there an answer to this issue.
how long has the box been standing? was it empty when you bought it? have known boxes to take a few miles before the oils fully circulated round all the bearings etc!
will only take a trip round the block to get the oil round the box if it has the correct amount in it sounds like the bearings are shot
NOT always the case my last fully rebuilt box didn't start to work correctly for at least 200 miles (would crunch into 3rd and 4th gear and used to rattle when in neutral)

well all the ones ive rebuilt at work have been fine after a trip round the block ok sometimes there is a small amount of notchy ness changing gear if i have uses new syncros and they have gone in dry but still as said gos after a trip round the block if it lasted 200 miles id be haveing a come back and it would get done again
The box would have been empty for some while. i had to put the oil in. Think i will go down the recon route next. Any body know where to go and not get ripped off . I would rather get my old box repiared. that box sounded like a box of bolts rattling around but only in third. I did this thrashing a BMW twat.
I have spoken to the breaker guy today and he said it is normal on any second hand / reconditioned box. It stops when i press the clutch.
if it stops when u press the clutch then it is the gearbox makeing the noise i.e input sharft bearing as u are taking drive away from the box! unless u have a noisey relase bearing or worn clutch springs but thats unlikely unless its a very small rattle/chattering noise
