'99 Escort 1.6 16v shaking from cold start
Hey, I have noticed a similar thread to mine but I believe my issue to be relating to a different fault on the car
I have a 1999 1.6 16v finesse estate, 45k miles, serviced 1k miles ago.
When starting from cold in a morning the engine is shaking/juddering until it warms up and you can feel the movement in the car. It isnt even that cold at the moment so im a little worried as to the cause.
The only previous issue I have had is irratic idling which was eventually fixed with a new ICV - but the car has a new icv, maf sensor, and lambda sensor. The recent service included oil, oil filter, air filter, plugs. All it didnt include was the HT leads and fuel filter.
Is it possible that HT leads or the fuel filter could be contributing to such violent shaking when starting from cold?
The only other faults I can think of are 1) the clutch needs replacing, (but shouldnt be engaged when idling anyway?) and 2) I "think" there is a small hole from which the exhaust is blowing (only seems to be present when increasing revs on the move)
Other than the above I have no idea what could have started this especially on such a low mileage car
Any help you can offer will be much appreciated
Thanks
Mike

Cheers lads
How much am i looking at for a replacement coil pack?
Im not sure if i used bosch or ngk tabetha, which would you recommend for my car?
Rich id probably say it is misfiring yeah, coolant temp sensor is probably the only sensor i havent changed so far so ill do that
Would you both advise doing the HT leads if i swap the plugs too? I dont know when the leads were last changed.
Thanks for your help & advice

we had a car exactly the same car mate wiv 35k on it ,had same problem, tried plugs and coil pack etc,but never cured it,we lived with it in the end as it only did it for 5 mins from cold then was fine, even told new owner and they were fine with it

Car is definitely misfiring, and the shaking is getting worse and worse. Just on the thought that my clutch needs doing... I saw a thread the other day that said the car was shaking when pulling away in 1st, which mine does also, and it turned out to be a knackered flywheel. Could that be related to my issue or would it not happen when idling?
Also what spark plugs & leads are best for a 1,6 zetec?
Oh and would you risk those and also a coil pack from ebay or not?
cheers

The best plugs for a zetec are genuine Ford ones, they do often run a bit funny with different make ones. Gen. ford are often cheaper that other ones too, think i paid Ł3ish quid each for mine.
Misfiring is more than likely down to a knackered coil pack, they do fail commonly. Ford do sell genuine ones and pattern part ones. I got one from a scrappy for my girlfriend's fiesta. Just take your chances really, as long as the part number on the sticker on the top is the same, there is only 2 or 3 different types across the ford range for the zetecs.

I'd have thought if the flywheel was warped you would have vibration all the time? If you are getting the clutch replaced, could be worth getting them to check the flywheel if its a concern though.
cheers mate, seems the car is doomed now.... head gasket gone. spent 9 hours on the hard shoulder saturday waiting for RAC. Turns out after assessing it myself, theres a split in the top pipe to the radiator, so water was spraying out. dropped the oil today and it was milky when it first came out the sump. So it needs head gasket, clutch, spark plugs, oil, oil filter, ht leads, and a back tyre. Not sure its worth spending that much on a car worth 1k. Just gotta decide whether to split for parts or just bang it on ebay needing head gasket, cheers for your help
Thats a bugger! I broke a mk6 escort for spares a couple of years back. I sold the alloys and the air conditioning bits but that was pretty much it. Really wasn't worth my time doing. If I were you I'd just stick it on ebay 99p start no reserve and see what happens!
