which connection on the battery terminal is it?
I was told the big red one is for the starter motor, but which one is for the alternator as i am going to cut the old one out from the alternator and put a new wire in as my voltage is very low and i have a new alternator and battery.

The cable joins into the positive flat connector, it is held on by a small bolt you will see on the top of the connector with others. The main cable from the connector goes to starter solenoid.
You should be getting at least 13V, if not then it won't be the alternator to battery cable, when I tested mine there was around .10V difference from alt itself and at the end of the cable.
You do have a battery light on the dash working don't you?

You can simply run another wire from the alt to the battery, so long as it is connected on the post will work, don't even need to remove the old one from the alt, and you must leave the original battery side of the wire connected, as this feeds lots of different things, it has many joins inside the loom, one about 6" into the loom by the alt, that corrodes terribly.

well i have bought a new lead and have conectted it to the alternator with the old one still on, running the wire under the slam panel.
the car started much better just alone, and the voltage on my secs monitor is just about ticking over to 13.8 volts, which is better than the 13 volts it used to have.
and when i put the rad fans on it only went down to 13 volts.
i then put everything on lights fog light front and rear and both the window heaters etc etc and it dropped to 11.5 volts, which was to be expected i suppose as the battery has not been getting its proper charge lately.
anyway whilst i was out getting the wire i bought a battery charger, which read once i put it on charge bearly half full. so i shall see what the out come is when it is fully charged from the chargers read out.
hoping for 14 volts at which point i will be happy.

No that will be a thin blue wire, the regulator is integral to the alt it is a black unit and has two retaining screws on the back of the alt.
To be honest those readings are find so long as you have 13V under load, best bet would be to check engine earth strap and battery earth strap for corrosion.
