As above MIG will deffo not be up to the job.

You need a good tig and also need to be very very good with it otherwise you'll end up blowing holes in the case.

My brother in law is an ex stainless and alloy fabricater who is working with my old man in the gearbox trade and it him about 3 months to master the art of welding the cases. Even now he only does it in very very special circumstances.

What box are you wanting to weld and why?

Better off trying to get a knackered box with a good casing, more hassle than it's worth TBH.

Stick welder can do it as long as it isn't too powerful. Can get cast and alloy rods for em.

personally i'd drill a nice hole, get a tap to suit and fit a short bolt to seal it up, welding won't help.
or chemical metal, or a metal plate shaped and drilled and tapped onto the casing and use some sealant between the plate and casing.

A mig will do it no problem, but will have to be a decent mig, as needs lots of heat input as alloy is such a good conductor of heat, can also as said be tigged or arcd, a local freindly tig place should soon sort it for you cheap enough.

personally i wouldnt be migging it as u'l find it harder to control the flow of product (wire) into the hole and may end up with a large build up on the inside or even worse bits inside . I'd get the tig out on a medium heat with a 3mm upwards 5% sillicone filler rod and take your time, if not get someone else to do it . Cheers Ally

you can mig it no problem just get some ally wire and pureshield argon gas and a teflon liner for your welding torch to stop the wire sticking its how we do it at work never had a problem before just make sure its extremely clean before you weld
