Default Some advise please!

Hi, Can anyone help me with a problem with my 2003 ST170? I have an intermittent fault which is driving me crazy!! Been experiencing rough running between 2000 and 3000 revs for months, particularly when the engine is cold. Now the dredded EMU warning light is on and code P1518 is reported, Intake Manifold Runner Control stuck open.
Wierd thing is that, after a few days running, it goes off and the fault is cleared......then its back on a few days later. I've heard this is a common problem but if the cable has snapped, surely the fault wouldn't clear????
Very confused. Any suggestions??????
Cheers

The flaps in the inlet manifold stick which could cause an intermittant fault, also the rod on the motor snaps causing problems.

thanks for that, I'm thinking its the flaps coz, if the rod had snapped, the fault would keep clearing itself?
