Do you need lambda sensors for track car
Hi Yawl
Trying to get out of buying Lambda sensors for st170 sonic7 kit car.
As its for track only iva / mot isn't needed.
I understand there is a pre cat and a post cat, they didn't come with engine kit etc so trying to save money if i can.
Could any one advise me as will soon be wiring it up?
Also if i do need them wheres cheapest place?

Depends on the specification of the engine management system. What kind of ecu do you use? And what would happen if the Oxygen sensor(s) are not present? Limited Operating Strategy with a maximum of 4000 rpm or nothing?
We always fit a wide-band Oxygen sensor even if the management doesn't use it for logging purposes, but we're talking Group A & WRC here.

Will check ecu number, but if it helps its the stock focus st170 ecu plan on using.
How does a wide band sensor help, do they cost alot and would i have to use one for the pre and post cat ?
Cheers!

Even if not needing to use a lambda sensor, always make provision for it so one can be used when mapping.
I would go for a aftermarket ecu if I was doing a track car, but would obviously add to cost, it might help asking stu/msd about running a diff ecu, but it will still need a suitable map/mapping.

A wide band sensor helps when mapping the car. When it is connected to a datalogger, then engine problems can be seen before the engine blows. You need to add this sensor to the existing sensors.
Cheapest way is to connect something like this: http://www.innovatemotorsports.com/
Take your pick, there are other makes too.
But it all depends on the rules for the class you are competing in. A programmable aftermarket ecu is a lot easier to map, but will add considerable to the costs of building the car. And the question is, is it allowed in your racing class?
