difference between an cossie 2wd & 4x4 head
#4
As above and the 4wd head has 3 bolts for thermostat housing, it also has different shape holes for the water, in that it has holes as opposed to long slits of the 2wd, in essence it is superior.

hi tabetha, from memory i think you will find that only early 2wd heads(3 door) had two bolt holes for the thermostat and the later 2wd(saph) had three.
I will need to check some heads in my workshop to confrim this though.

thanks I did all the work myself, bar the cam cover, which was already done when i bought the car.
As people have said on here,, You can check the part number on the front of the head,
3 bolt thermostat and turbo damper lugs not present would more likely be a 4x4 head.
Theres also a difference in combustion chamber volume between a 4x4 head and 2wd.
Good luck fella.

This is interesting, my 1989 2wd saphire has three bolts for the thermostat housing, but has the older style wide slits for the waterway rather than the three holes in the head below.
