my rev counter was not working so i ran a new wire from the neg of the coil to the green wire of the clocks and it started to work but the problem with it now is it will tick over at just under 1000rpm but when im speeding up the rev counter will go streight off the clocks as if its reading 9000rpm

is this a faulty guage ? or have i done something wrong

 

So long as the car from which the rev counter came had the same ignition system type and number of cylinders it will be ok, if not it is duff.
