idle control valve
Hi chaps
I started up my 2wd cosworth engine it was not fully warmed up and when I unpluged the idle control valve the engine cut out should it do this.
also can i set up my mixture with a co meter it has a 310 msd chip 3bar map and greens what should the meter reading be.

Stu/msd normally maps/writes for around 2% to 2 1/2% CO idle when hot.
Make sure you set the fuel pressure to what it should be as well, if you phone stu with the chip number written on the chip he will confirm what it is, and the settings needed for that chip.
If it really was stone cold yes it most likely would cut out unplugging the iscv.
The base idle needs setting up though, once the co has been set(fully warmed up) then disconenct the iscv, turn off all electrical loads apart from the engine, and using the screw/locknut on the underside of the throttle housing adjust to around 900 rpm, when you plug back in the iscv the revs will most likely rise for a few secs, this is normal, but will settle to base idle a few secs later.
The iscv is used to raise the revs only, when cold, when electrical loads are applied etc.

Look first at the FPR, fuel pressure regulator on the front/forward end of the fuel rail, and at the top will either be a hole in the top where a allen key has been inserted to fiddle with the fuel pressure, OR it will still have the little dull grey tin alloy blanking seal on there, if this is the case it will be ok, and not need adjusting.
To check you will need a pressure gauge hooked into the fuel rail between the rail and regulator is easiest, then note the reading with engine running, and adjust if necessary, after confirming with msd what it should be, it will almost certainly be std which is 3 bar(45psi) with the vaccum line ON/connected to the FPR, with the line disconnected(and blocked with bolt etc) it will go up to around 3.7.

Cheers tabetha
the regulator has not been fiddled with a bought it new i will ring msd with the chip number
i would take it there but its a fare drive from selby to black pool unless they have dealers in yorkshire.
thanks again for your help
