If its only a wisp its normall. If you can see it quite clearly in the rear view mirror you've got problems. Are you using a lot of oil? Could be signs of turbo wear. Is it high mileage.

Petrol wise cossie's are quite thirsty. Don't know the exact mpg of a standard one though.

Im getting through a fair bit of oil yes but i do have a small leak im yet to locate. I changed the oil and filter today and what came out was proper black. Would dirty oil tend to burn more? I'll see what i use this week. Its going on the ramp next week so hopfully find the leak. What other signs of turbo wear could i check for?

When you turn the ignition off does the engine try and run on a little bit by itself (this usually happens when the turbo's well knackered).

Whats the boosts characteristics like, does it hold boost or does it tail off. Have you had the car a while, do you feel its not as punchy as it once was, is it feeling weak.

Don't know if dirty oil burns more buts it definitly great at not lubricating.

end float mate , take pipe off front of turbo and try to move shaft back and forth , if it does then its knackered.

if its not your turbo then its your engine

The pipe that feeds air into the front of the turbo, it'll be between the turbo and the airbox. Take this off the front of the turbo and play with the the propeller shaft in the centre of the turbo. Try moving it back and fore. Does move?

Could well be a sign of worn rings obviously dependant on millage/abuse the engine has had. but if its whispy blue under a lot of load then i would be placing my bets on this...
There are other things of course such as buggered turbo but the smoke would normally be on over-run not under load

Ckecked turbo and theres no movment. Well only round and round which even me with my little knowledge assumes thats all good So it looks like its something else. Quite a lot came out when i cained it 2day and its quite clearly blue now. I'd of asked the poor bloke i overtook but i thought he might get a bit funny if the fumes had gone to his head. How can i check the rings. Head off right? How hard is this and whats it likely to cost. I dont have the cash to have it rebuilt. Is this something i could do myself? I have a workshop manual in the post whick i assume goes through it step by step. How long would it take and whats likely to need replacing?

the car has done 128000 miles. Got loads of receipts and the last owner was 50 and had it for 7 years. FSH and looks in good condition, nice and tidy. Would the type of oil make a difference?

HI.

20/50 OR 15/40, should be ok, why dont you go to your local halfords
and buy a compression tester and follow the easy instructions for compression test
and by this u should figure what the oil burning problem
is they are under £20,and very useful
Turbo play u are allowed (axial )end to end 008thou, and side to side022thou, max,
Dave,
