Default Escort Rs turbo Overheating

The car still seems to be overheating after having it set up and running fine on the rolling road at 190bhp but even driving it normally down the motorway the temperature is going right up near the red until you turn the heaters on full

The car has a new re-cored rad, with pro alloy front mount intercooler.

Couple of things i want to check

What does that valve do in the picture for the coolant system? The one with the white plug

Also does it matter which way round the hoses go onto the heater matrix? The bottom one going to the Y piece

If these are correct what could be causing it to run so hot?

It hasnt had a new water pump but the engine is just rebuilt and had a new thermostat when rebuilt and was overheating and has since been changed again since to a genuine ford one.

IF you take the small hose off the top of the thermostat housing the water is coming out of there but its now flowing out quickly. How much should come out of there or what is the best way to test the water pump to see if its working properly?

Thanks

not really sure how to test water pump, but for what they cost and the ammount of time they take to fit, I would consider replacing even just to eliminate it from possible causes of your problem

Its a pain in the arse. Let me know if you figure out what it is. I will let you know if i can. Did you change your thermostat?

Do you have a pro alloy front mount intercooler?

It had a new fan switch and temp sensor but it melted the fan switch or something shorted out and the plug was damaged too so we just got the new fan switch yesterday and the plug. We did however put the fan on a switch.

But with motorway driving at 70 it shouldnt need teh fans on anyway?

I quite sure the temp sensor is correct but i have ordered a new one from ford also.

at 190bhp maybe you just need a bigger rad??

is it a 1.6 CVH or is it ZVH? - i hear ZVH's can have head gasket issues

if youve recently emptied the water system you could have an airlock...

could be a number of things.

just a thought aswell, not sure how the pipes go but make sure that both the water pipes going to the heater matrix are coming from a T piece...
basically what i mean is, if you turn the heaters to cold, its not going to stop it circulating to somewhere else!

We removed the thermostat completly to see if that helped and it hasnt

The fans are coming on when they should but its running too hot and they dont turn off again once that have came on.

Any other ideas to what could be the problem?

are the hoses all getting hot? does the rad get hot?

could be blockage in rad.
could be water pump not pushing the water round.

its not uncommon for a cvh water pump to go.

easiest way would be to remove the water pump, turn the pulley and see if the wheel turns the inner part. might aswell replace it for what they cost

I had the same problem with my CVH when I had it... I did so many things and nothing helped. My conclusion was that my intercooler is blocking the air that should go to rad.
I had a sugestion to seal everything around the rad, so that air would be traped and had no other way to go just through the rad.... never done it as I changed to ZVH later, but you could give it a go.

if the electric fan is working it wont matter about the intercooler in front of it, the air will get dragged there anyway by the fan. must be something to do with rad tho because turning the heaters on is cooling the engine. in effect the heater matrix is doing the radiators job.

make sure there is water getting to the rad, check all the rad pipes are getting hot and feel the rad itself. make sure the fan is cutting in when it should.
is there a small return pipe coming from the top of the rad to the water bottle? if there is check this is not blocked because its a self bleed mechanism to stop the rad airlocking.

No it comes from thermostat housing on CVH

couple of things to try, fitting an oil cooler, not the ford oil warmer, but a proper mocal type one.
also disconnect water cooling to the turbo, just let the engine run on a bit after a hard run, you'll see a big drop in water temps and won't really affect the turbo's life span.
i run a 1.8 zvh, was running 190bhp or thereabouts i didn't have any overheating problems at all, this is on my mk2 fiesta, with standard rad.
