Cool How to install Elextric waterpump in a Cossie 4x4?

Guys,

I need some guidance.

I have bought an electric waterpump, but am not sure how the plumbing goes on the block....

Do I keep the original waterpump and just pull out the impeller, or do I put a plate on there like one of the fellow members suggested ( dash 16) but this seemed much too small a hole for the water to pass through.

Advice is welcome.

Do you need to keep a pulley there ?, if so just need to machine the impellor off, after extracting shaft etc, you will need to leav a location amount on to stop shaft coming through.
If you don't need a pulley location there, then weld up hole after removing guts, then install pump in hose etc.

Keeping the original water pump and removing the impeller keeps things simple with regard to your belts. Using a plate with outlet is a little better as you save on the slight parasitic loss of turning the pump pulley assuming you can ensure the belt is routed satisfactorily. Dash-16 sounds a little small as that's only 7/8" ID.

Sailor Bob, that is what I thought too!

I think I will go with the suggestion below and have a flange made up.... does any body already have a design for this I can have to take to a fabricator?

Hi James,

I will answer your question in two parts, 1) what I want it for and 2) what the marketing makes you want to have it for

1) I have the engine installed in a Dax Rush (Lotus Se7en design) and the car always runs hot-ish as it can't get rid of the heat due to the engine compartment being so cramped. What the electric water pump with digital controller will allow me to do, is have more control over the water temp. Especially in traffic and in the summer. This pump ONLY works hard when it needs to and is not on all the time (although it does a pulsation on / off cycle when the engine is cold). It will also allow the coolant to be pumped around the block for 5 mins after the engine is switched off, to avoid heat soak build up. The final benefit to me, is that I can pull the whole steel pump out and replace this housing with a light-ish Alu plate and elbow, thus also saving weight (which in a clubbie goes a long way)......

2) The marketing also sells the system as: giving added power at top-end due to the engine not having to labour the pump around and therefore losing power.

Oh and the Willams F1 team used such a system in Melbourne last year (when it was bloody hot) and had NO drama's with cooling - if its good enough for them, it MUST be good enough for us mere mortals.... ha ha ha

Hope that answers the Q.

cheers for the reply daxman ,i see what you mean ,i like the fact you can run it after the engine is switched off as it saves you cooking everything under the bonnet ,
Is your turbo water cooled as this would help immensly i take it
cheers james
