Default car revs at 2000rpm when started from cold

hi i have an escort van 1.8zetec and it revs really high when its started from cold, will never do it when the engine is warm and if i dont wait for the revs to drop before driving away, the revs just stay up

confusing!

air bypass/idle speed control valve whatever you want to call it. Had it loads of times.

all zetecs have a idle speed control valve which raises the revs when cold. it should go down on its own when the engine is warm dont worry. if you find it doesnt settle down when warm try reving the engine to about 5-6000 rpm quickly and that should reset it. let me know how u get on.

ok thanks mate, its just a bit annoying that i cant drive it till it drops otherwise when i stop at the end of the road its still revving at over 2000rpm, do you not think the idle control maybe worn out or dirty?

could be but its upto you if you replace it. you will find it on the back of your inlet manifold somewhere as it depends on what type of manifold you have but its roughly in the same place .

try cleaning it out with carb cleaner as that sometimes does the job but if not you can get one second hand from a scrap yard for a couple of quid ! or a new one from ford for i think about Ł15 - Ł20
