Cossie smoke help
Hey guys, noticed a touch of smoke earlier while idleing in traffic for 5 mins, it was oil as it was blue, whats the easiest way to rule out turbo/stem seals/rings? Im thinking (or hopeing!!) its the usual turbo shaped culprit but whats the easiest/quickest way to put your finger on it?Car is a '90 4x4 saph, standard tune, t3 etc etc only mods are exhaust & filter.

before you start taking anything off; you can rule out some things
things it could be:
turbo seals
valve stem seals
valve guide
piston rings
is the engine a new build or is it old? mileage?
a good way to see if its stem seals/ guides is to overrun down a big hill; then at the bottom give it a boot - if a big puff of blue smoke appears, then "more tha likely" its likely to be guides or stem seals
you can simply get a compression test done for piston rings - any garage worth there onions will have this equipment
start with that then come back

AS above, trouble with compy test is it only tests compression rings, and the oil control rings are normally the first to go, so it can have shagged oil rings allowing oil past but ace compression just like my 160,000+ bottom end(doing it this year!!), even does regular RR work at that mileage no problem.
I would first check the breather system is totally unclogged, then possibly if not doing
so use a thicker oil such as a 50 or 60 weight.
Any more than about 60,000 generally and the head is worn to some extent especially guides.
I assume there is no step seal in your turbo, or drilled ring as this keeps a bit of prerssure there to stop oil burninmg as they don't have a seal in the normal way.
