Gearbox Oil Cooler?

anyone running one? whats involved with fitting one?
is it a similar process to an engine oil cooler system, is it a case of tapping into the box or is it easier than that?
Any help gratefuly accepted!!

Ok. This involves the same components as an oil-system of a engine, basically. What you need is a pump and a cooler, thats the basis. Then you need to make a two holes in the casing, one for taking warm oil out of the box, and one for letting the cooled oil return from the oil-cooler into the box. The hole made for taking the warm oil should be located somewhere where its guaranteed to be oil all the time, i.e. the bottom of the gearbox. The return hole should be located so that the cooled oil mixes with the oil already in the box before it comes in contact with the gears and other mechanical parts of the box.

Well, if im not mistaking, some model of ford probe has gearbox-cooler as standard equipment, might be a good start looking for a pump! Otherwise get in contact with any company dealing with gearboxes, these should know what to use for your gearbox!
Another thing i forgot to mention is the fact that you should use some kind of oil thermostat so that the oil in the gearbox is not getting too cold! Check with burton power for these as an example! www.burtonpower.com

What makes you think your gearbox oil is getting too hot anyway?
Its VERY unusual to have a gearbox oil cooler.
Waste of money IMO,especially on a road car as the oil never gets that hot,plus you would need a really good pump as box oil is much thicker than engine oil,it would have to be an electric pump aswell,unless you wanted to mess about with mounting something like a belt driven power steering pump,or maybe a saxo/106 electric steering pump.
I wouldnt bother to be honest.

It's not deffo to be honest, I was just wondering what was involved.
It aint gonna be used on the road much, it would primarily be for track days, so the oil would be much hotter than that in a road car, the car will be pushing out iro 250+ bhp and will be running a BC S1 box, so I just wondered whether it was a Viable option to help preservw the box!!

Well thats a way to look at it though
Me, im interested in every modification that could be performed on a vehicle which increases the durability of the components. I'd rather put money into a modification such as that, rather than blindfoldedly raise the stress on components without having performed them first, logical enough?

A cheaper option would be to fit a temp sensor and guage somewhere in the box where it will be covered in oil all the time and monitor it to see if you need a cooler at all.
I doubt the box oil ever gets 'that' hot to need cooling,if the oil is too cold it could do just as much damage as too hot.

It wont cost much to rig up a temp gauge to see how hot it does get,no point having a cooler if it doesnt get hot!

I don't know if it helps anything but on my Escos you actuaally can overheat gearbox oil - after WHOLE DAY of practice on the track by 3 people there where some problms with switching gears which I think come form over heating. At the same time there where problems with engine oil pressure at idle so I think the car was genneraly too hot - even inside it was hot as hell on a cool day. But as I say this is after something like 10 hours of time trials and such.
