Default Puma ABS/TC problem

Im getting the TC readomly cutting for no reason in the other halfs 1998 Puma.
It first happened when she was pulling out of a junction but not spining the wheels then started to happen at random times when overtaking or just slowing down.

I have just been out in it and there is a grinding sort of noise when you brake if one wheel starts to slide (I was putting the inside wheel in the mud to make it slide)
The grinding noise isnt there when you go on the brakes normally or even when you jam on it only seems to be when one wheel locks up or is they start spinning.

What would cause the TC to come in without the wheels spinning? A sensor?
What would the grinding noise be? The ABS pump? Are there any known common faults with the ABS or TC system in the Puma?

Loads of questions i know!

I have taken the fuses out of the ABS for now and the problem is gone but obviously it cant be left like that.

Anyone?
Id have put the random TC down to a dodgy abs sensor but the grinding noise sounds to me like the pump is gone.

Would a funked ABS pump cause the TC to act strangly?

I've had a similar problem on the wifes ST170, ABS light and TC light came on, changed the ABS sensor, still stayed on.

On taking the hub apart found a stone or something had got in between the hub and knuckle ( rear ) and damaged a circular magnetic ring that the ABS reads from, changed this and all is now fine

Dont know if this helps.

Thanks, ill have a closer look in the morning. She says it happened once today so as the ABS pump is off i guess that rules that out.

Where is the TC controlled from?

Not sure !
I dont know why the TC light came on aswell ! I assume if the ABS has a fault the TC wont work aswell.

The ABS and TC circuitry are connected on a puma. Do you have the ABS-TC orange light on the dash?

At 12mph, the ABS pump does a self test - it sounds like it's grinding for half a second. Is this happening? If not, then the pump could be on the way out.

If it is testing and your light is still on, then it could well be the sensors. The rear sensors especially can get dirty with crap from the rear shoes. Take the hubs off and make sure the sensor heads are shiny clean. (The silver disc to the left of the shaft)

Make sure the abs ring on the back of the hub is ok as well:

On the front - just make sure the sensors are clean on the front and nothing is obstructing the ABS ring:

The fuse is ok in the central fuse box? (The one under the cubby hole to the right of the steering wheel) : Fuse 13, 15A - blue for the ABS.

Also check the related fuses in the fuse box under the bonnet:
fuse 30 - 3 amp ABS
fuse 31 - 30 amp ABS
fuse 33 - 30 amp ABS

To test the sensors:

1. Remove Wheel
2. Remove Inner Arch Lining
3. Unplug ABS Sensor
4. Set Multimeter to Ohms
5. Set Range so meter reads between 1000 and 1200 Ohms
6. Test the sensor plug LEADING to the wheel hub by going across the 2 pins
7. A good sensor should read between the values with an average of 1.1K Ohm
8. Anything else can point to coils breaking down
9. Remember to wiggle the sensor lead when testing to check the internal coils
10. Repeat if necessary on other side.

Check the condition of the leads too as they can wear on the tyres especially if on 17" wheels.

Good luck - let me know if you need more help.

That's excellent mate I'll have a good poke around tomorrow, I have to change the rear cylinders and shoes anyway as I think one of the cylinders is sticking.

No worries mate - good luck in getting to the bottom of it.

Feel free to nip on over to my forum for more info on pumas and random stuff too.

The main one where it goes into the battery terminal connector, it was giving dodgy readings when it was twisted so must have been moving about the place.

just found this thread as i have this problem on my puma abs kicking in and the pump going nuts while driving, but ive noticed the metal ring on the front is slighty damaged would that cause the sensor to read it wrong, ive just changed the front right abs sensor as the diag said it was faulty
