Depends on what you want to do. If you want to map for power then I suggest using a rolling road or alternatively an engine test bench.
Usually these people will have all the right tools to monitor the engine.

well then engine will be a fresh build and installed inthe car, I would like to have a god at mapping the car with more boost, just trying to see what is envolved and what parameter I need to learn, I dont have access to a rr so the open road it is.lol

Is it obvious to tell from det cans if its pinking? what does it sound like

My 4 part live mapping guide should help you understand what goes into a Live map. I have attached all four parts. Please feel free to download them for free.

Any problems, they are also hosted here.

Its kind of a tapping/clicking sound, it can be hard to hear at high rpm if you have a lot of valve train noise, but its normally obvious lower in the rev range.

What ecu does your car have?

Ive not personally mapped anything on gotech, but looks pretty straightforward software etc, im sure that will be a good starting point to learn from.

Start by trying to get it to do 14.7:1 on the light load sites with no closed loop lambda and it will be good practice without really risking anything melting.

i want some det cans too and just re-read garage19's article. he discusses using good ear defenders to screen out other noise but what is good? the prices seem to range from Ł3 - Ł10. are there any recommended electronic options available which could be permanent install?

Yep, loads of things less expensive, and given that they all use the same sensor, there tends not to be much difference with them IME.

That said, I got my knock box off stu a year ago, its never gone wrong, the headset is comfy, it has adjustable volume on each ear, its got a nice quality feel to it, and I cant fault it.

For a serious user who is doing it a lot, I think its a fairly good option, but for occasional use, you could easily spend half the money and still get something good enough.

And being totally honest, for doing ONE car, Id go for manual det cans anyway, they work better in terms of clarity of sound IMHO, they are totally reliable, and are cheap to make, they're only downside is not being convenient to go from car to car with.

Mapping 1 car when you dont know what you are doing and have to buy all the equipment is SO much dearer than taking it to someone, and thats even if your time has no value.

You need to take into account that someone like stu will probably map it in half a tank of petrol to your 2-3 tanks as a beginniner too, so thats anothe 100 quid gone.

That said, i'd say you should have an AFR gauge anyway, and if you make your own det cans they are cheap, so on that basis its not so bad.

But do bear in mind you may well excessively det or borewash the engine, which means building a new one, lol

The exact reason I didn't road map my megasquirt myself, no knock detection... I'm hoping someone at work can help me out now... Good luck with it all!
