Default Zetec E Tuning?

Hello,

Well, Basically I know the Zetec E bottom end can take about 350bhp on standard internals, and is ideal for going the forced induction route, which is very tempting

But what is it like in N/A form? Can it be a N/A screamer? ie 8k rpm +?

As far as Im aware, the IB5 'box will fit, but break very quickly as they can take around 150Bhp?

Is it just a case of Custom Engine Mount, uprated drivetrain, loom and Ecu?

And if anyone has done a Zetec E conversion into a mk4/5/Puma could you advise on any areas?

That's a very impression collection of misinformation you've managed to gather. It's exactly why the internet is a minefield!!

How do you know this? There isn't any truth in it at all. Some people risk running the standard rods at ~300bhp levels in turbocharged form but i've not heard of anyone running more than that (as in genuine power figures). The standard pistons are certainly not handling 350bhp for any sustained period!

It's fine in N/A form. If you know what you're doing 280bhp should be attainable. 8000rpm is okay, but you said 8000+, so what do you mean? 8000? 9000? 12000?

The IB5 can handle a lot more than that and the lifespan depends on the condition of the box and how mechanically sympathetic the driver is.

If this is for a Puma you mention last, then yes some custom fabrication will be required. You're best to approach a tuner who specialises in this kind of conversions and who would know all the pitfalls etc.

Ah, Back to the drawing board then

Well, 10k rpm would be fun, but too much work I gather, I thought 8k would be reasonable yet still fun, obviously If I had Camshafts and Management to suit.

As for the 350bhp on standard internals, I have been told various times (not saying its right though) I am not to know as I have no experience of Tuning the Zetec E Engine, hence the questions. Perhaps 'know' was a bad choice in word.

Same goes for the IB5 and 150bhp 'Limit'....as I have read and heard, again, not arguing, just stating its what Ive learnt.

The intended project is not a Puma, Its a mk4 Fiesta, however the mk4/5 Fiestas and The Puma share the same Chassis Design underneath and share many component parts

What I 'think' it may take to work the conversion:

Zetec E engine
Custom exhaust manifold
Possibly a Custom Inlet Manifold
Custom Engine mount
Uprated Drivetrain (inc clutch)
Suitable ECU
Custom wiring loom
Uprated/Suitable fuel Pump

Just a Very Basic Idea. Yes I know it will be wise to upgrade to Better Brakes and Suspension aswell

I'm just trying to get an idea of the work involved and would like to now any 'hidden' work that might need undertaking

1700 engine in the Puma is pretty underrated engine.

What do you really want out of the engine? Track day, Weekend Car or Daily Driver?

I think it would be a better N/A engine than a Zetec E and lighter.

Well, Ive now decided to hold back and just drop a 1.6 Zetec SE in as its bolt for bolt. Plus the Spec I want it is simple, cheap, and I love a nice set of cams with a lumpy idle

Puma engines are good, no doubt, And easy to build up to FRP spec' but its finding a good engine thats the worry, too many have I known to have there Bottom ends fail soon down the line

Thanks for the help
