Default Mk2 Mondeo Cluster Problem

I bought a mk2 Mondeo on Monday, then on Tuesday I lost the speedo on the instrument cluster for 30 seconds. It has been fine up until today where on a 3 hour trip it worked for literally less than a minute. Now it's not working at all.

When I loose the speedo the fuel gage also creeps up by around 1/4 of a tank, then when speedo randomly cuts back in the fuel light goes on the but the fuel gage stays the same then slowly settles back down to the right level. Also the airbag light is on regardless of what the speedo is doing, I have no idea if the airbag light is related.

Before I start investigating is there any classic problem with these symptoms I should be looking at? Has the cluster just had it? Thanks in advance.

I'm unsure if it's the VSS because of everything else that happens to the cluster when it goes and the car is running superbly even when the speedo goes, no stalling or stuttering.

Could somebody just confirm this? I really don't want to change it if I don't have too because of the stud snapping problem.

What is the build date (not registration) of the car. There are at least 3 different cluster/PCM types over the manufacturing life of the Mk2.....and that's not even allowing for the engine/transmission/equipment/trim options.

I'm having similar problems with revcounter, but I think thats down to trying to run the EEC-V and a MegaSquirt together.

I had no idea, did they revise it so many times because it was prone to failure? It came back as August 1996, and if it makes any difference it's a 2.0 zetec ghia.

AFAIK, they weren't changing because of reliability. There were going through a series of general fundimental changes as they changed the engine management (EEC-IV to EEC-V), security (PATS external/internal to PCM), timer functions, etc.

All the bits that are going a bit funny use the same connector on the back of the cluster (there are 2 connector IIRC). They're actually contacts that are pushed against the flexible PCB, so it could just need removing and the connectors/contacts cleaning. I'd give that a go first.
