Default BOOST PROBLEM ?????

hi everyone, well for a long time now ive had a strange smoking problem, i eventually sent my turbo back to turbo technics for them to strip it as i suspected it was in need of a rebuild even though the shaft had no movement. while i was cleaning up the hoses etc i found what im sure was the cause of the smoking and also the turbo which ended up needing a rebuild. the oil return hose had callapsed which in turn had obviously blocked the oil flow which prob meant the oil building up in the turbo and it eventually finding its way out through the weakest point and then the oil burning off in the exhaust.

after calling turbo technics to find out what they found when they stripped the turbo, i opted to purchase a brand new turbo instead of a rebuild because it didnt work out much more to be honest. i mentioned to turbo technics that i wanted my new turbo to be sent to me with the actuator set the same as my old item, when i received the turbo i fitted it all back on then started the car, all was well and the smoking has disapeared but on my first test drive after letting the car warm up and checking the oil pressure and temp etc i began to give it some more throttle, the boost gauge reads pretty much 20 psi peak boost but then the car back off suddenly which jolts the car, accelerating again it will always do it at the same boost pressure.

luckily i checked and measured the actuating rod before i sent the turbo away, ive checked the new actuator setting and the rod is infact slightly longer than before but what i didnt check when i measured it was to make sure the wastegate was fully closed, when the car isnt running would the wastegate be fully closed anyway ?????. would this be the cause of the problems im having, would the rod being slighty longer cause the car to suddenly jolt and back off when it hits my peak boost setting ????.

thanx in advance

dave

Have they sent you the turbo back to you with your old actuator on, or a new one ?

If it's a new one, then it sounds like either it's a different spec, or your old one was getting tired. Lengthen the shaft to decrease the boost. Do this by cracking the locknut off, then remove the actuator from the wastegate arm and give the end fitting a couple of turns, then re-assemble and see what the boost is.

What jon@work says, the gate is normally closed ie before boost so it builds up, it opens the gate to control control it(boost).
