jus got myself a escort for a project cleaned it up polished it.thought id clean the air filter then noticed the carb had all sludge in it so took the rocker off to see what that was like and thats all coverd aswell.and the gastket had gone all i can think is water mixing with oil

It is 1100/1300 ?
It is valencia engine, it is a very known problem for cars doing short trips and using crappy/cheap oil.
They eventually break the rocker shaft, due to lack of lubrication.
Try some wynns flush, then refill with decent oil and get it nice and hot.
I used VALVOLINE in my escys and the inside of the r/cover was spotless, after this.

Yep get it all clean, and remember the oil needs to be change twice a year at least regardless of mileage.
An old trick was to put soundproofing felt around the rocker cover by making it a little jacket to keep it nice and warm!!, it works as well, did it on my minis as well.

kk il clean it all tommorow i no it has had cheap oil and never been warm coz my old man used it.he onli did like a mile here and there so it never got warm.il have to get a new gasket aswell.i reckon the hard part is gonna be cleaning in the top the carb shouldnt be to bad.

Just use a CARB CLEANER spray very effective, don't overtighten rocker cover!!, or it will distort and leak.
