Default S2 misfire

my series 2 has developed a misfire. when driving along not under load it starts misfiring and the tachometer goes mental.

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

Ignition fault (rev counter going mental being a tell tale sign), the distributor would be a prime suspect.

I have no idea what a HM is either.

I'd bet its something before the high tension side, being as the rev counter is going mental.
