sierra hatch steering column lower bush

Default sierra hatch steering column lower bush

my uncles car failed its mot on the steering column lower bush and he has asked me to replace it,i have no clue about sierras and cant find where the bush is located,he has gave me this bush kit(pic below) yet i cannot find a similar bush on his car that i can replace for him.
unfortunatley he is nearly deaf and when i try to question him about it he either cant hear me or starts rabiting on about something else

can anyone give me an idea of where i should be looking?

looks like the bit that goes through the hole in the bulk head mate

it goes where the steering shaft passes through the bulkhead.and i,m sure you have to remove the whole steering to fit the smaller bushing on the shaft itself if its anything like a sapphire as the parts look identical

As above and then complain to the testing station as the lower bush is not a failure item, only the top colume bush is

hmmm interesting, my saff cossie failed MOT on saturday because of this lower srteering bush. How can I be sure that this is not a failure item? I live in NI. And also a friend is giving me a bush set from a Sierra 4x4, I guess it will be the same??

Don't know about NI mot rules, suppose it depends on whether you wear a balaclava or not whether it passes ha ha!!
The through bush part is the same on all sierras though.

It's easy to do, just mark the position of the column(in engine bay) in the joint before undoing the 10mm nut that holds it under bonnet.

Thx, will do. Gonna have a go at changing it on saturday. Mind you when I think of it the steering wheel is very loose and has a lot of north-south movement so I guess the guy was within his rights to fail the car!!!

Look at my thread in the resto & rebuilds room, I just changed the bush a few weeks ago and there's photos in there. Easy to do, just sounds like alot since you have to remove the column, but it's basically only 3 bolts you have to undo, 2 in the car and 1 onto the steering coupling, and disconnect the loom from the column, piece of piss, did it in an hour.

I used it for pushing the rubber bush back into the hole, because it was new and very tight it wouldn't go in properly, so i assembled all 3 parts of the bush and just tapped the wood by hand to get it all in place instead of fucking around in the footwell trying to push it in by hand, alot easier with the wood!

makes total sense!!
BTW the motor looks just great and a real credit to you. You have obviosuly spent many hours grafting but you know what, it's worth it.

Cheers, just wish it was finished so i could drive it!
Only a few minor bits to do so shouldn't be too long before it's back on the road.
I'm actually trying to buy an M5 that's in Belfast at the moment, so if that goes ahead I'll probably shunt the cossie back into storage again...

I don't unbolt the column, the triangular rod that goes from the inside of the column to through the bulkhead is not fixed, this can be slid up the column inside till it clears the hole, then put bush back in bulkhead hole, slide triangular rod back out and extend down through the hole, they're not tight as only held in with a triangular plastic clip, it's so they can move up in the event of a front end crash, and effectively shorten the column length so it doesn't go through your chest!!
Don't forget to push the spring clip on the triangular rod down all the way to hold the new bush inner in place, otherwise it will move upwards and pop out of the hole!!

i know this thread is old but can anyone tell me if the above statement is documented anywhere as most mot stations seem to want to fail on that bush
