Default Escort mk4, fitting a vacuum gauge

hi, i have just fitted a vacuum gauge to my mk4 escort, 1.3 OHV, only trouble is it doesn't seem to be operating properly. When the car is idling, it sits in the poor area, but when i accelerate it seems to move up to drive, then idle, and when i accelerate even more drops down to poor again. im not sure if this is due to my engine, or if i've put it in the wrong place, i put the t-piece in line with the pipe from the carb to the distributor. There is also one that goes from the carb to the break master cylinder, but this one wud seem impossible to cut. Erm.. some help please!

Just had a look at a fitting guide for vac gauge from splitfire
They say to fit in to inlet manifold vacuum hose using T piece similar to fitting boost gauge. If this isnt possible you will need to drill and tap the inlet manifold
