Engine swapping compatibility and simplicity on mk2 escorts
At the other end of summer I'll be likely getting hold of a mk2 escort and I was thinking it'd help keep the costs down by getting hold of some random 1.3 and swapping the engine later. I want to drop any original mk2 engine in ot primarily for insurance purposes but I was thinking of a 2.0 but I wasn't sure if mountings were the same and stuff like that or if I'd be better off sticking to a 1.6 xflow. I'd like a 2.0 but since I'm gonna be largely relying on help from friends since I'm still in the process of learning all this stuff, I didn't want to ask too much. I've got all summer to ponder and learn but I might as well get started in the right direction.

where are you based?
if anywhere near west london, pop in to the speedshack in west drayton and he'll tell you everything you need to know and have the parts available

Derby unfortunately, but I was just thinking, how much resemblance would they bare to the mk1s. What's really concerning me is are the engine bay's that much different in the rs2000s, I figured they changed to a bullet nose which means it's more likely that they'll have made other changes with that one. I know that other than they're largely identical to ye olde mk1s under the bonnet and my Dad knows all about them.

they're the same mate. only difference really in the engine bay, and it doesn't affect the engine is the strut top mounts being a different size between mk1 and mk2.
all you need for a 2 litre ohc from a sierra is an rs2000 alloy bellhousing and sump and engine mounts. it's all been done thousands of times before. get along to a few shows this summer and talk to owners.
personally, i wouldn't be looking at such an engine these days. i'd be looking at a more modern engine like a 2 litre zetec. not quite as straightforward, but easy and cheap enough these days and the power and torque available from a std injected unit is superb. needs water rail mods to fit without cutting bulkhead though.
