On the assumption its a MK3/4 MFI, the relay is up under neath the drivers side of the dash, a pinky purple colour.

the car cranks over and has spark and fuel but wont run. we looked for the relay ad the only one we found was a black one in the speaker hole. any more helpful information would be great?

Is the pump running then if you say you are getting fuel?
Can you even see a pink plug up in the same place as they black one?

ok
In that case, remove the relay, and bridge a wire from the from the Red to the Black/Red (the red is permenantly live so be careful), the pump should run, then try and start, if it does then its obviously the relay faulty.

the above sounds like a good approach to eliminate whether its a relay fault or not, they do fail and are fairly common so it is a prime suspect

CHEERS LADS, BIGGER PROBLEM NOW, THE OIL LIGHT IS ON, WE PUT NEW PISTONS IN AND HAD THE HEAD SKIMMED. WE GOT IT RUNNING THANKS TO U GUYS, WENT TO THE PUB TO CELEBRATE, THEN GOT BACK TO WORK ON IT ON SAT, AND THE OIL LIGHT CAME ON, WE HAD RUNNING IN OIL IN IT AND I KNOW THAT CAN SOME TIMES CAUSE THE LIGHT TO COME ON DUE TO THIN OIL, SO WE DRAINED IT AND PUT 10/40 IN, IT WAS FINE AND NOW BACK ON YET AGAIN,
ANY IDEA'S?

Ive said it before and ill say it again, spending Ł30/40 on a good oil pressure gauge is one of the best investments you can ever make
Glad you got it running, gay the oil light is on though
