Default black or silver top zetec turbo??

which engine is better??? i am looking at getting eagle steel rods and je pistons which are designed for the black top engine, but WILL fit the silver top. I am not worried about the starter motor being round the back of the engine as i am planning on fitting a later generation gearbox anyway....
what i would like to know is what are the internal/external differences and WHICH is the better engine. cheers

i have been told that the rods in the silver top (zetec e) are stronger and also is the crank as you are changing the rods it aint an issue i can not c ford changing the crank personally but who knows.

I wouldn't worry so much about the strength of the bottom ends so much as the difference between the heads! There is a difference that makes the later head better for high HP turbo engines and it has nothing to do with how hard you can rev the engine.

i reckon the black top is the better engine, the differences in the bottom ends is the black has longer conrods and shorter pistons.

Its all to do with the choice of oil you would use for high load applications

Think about the difference between the two heads.

valves shouldn't stick these days, thought they called a load back to find the problem then fixed em at service time? was only the series one, very early ones that had the problem anyhoo iirc. get a series 2 if you want silvertop.
