Default FORD TRANSIT HELP!!

Any ford mechanics out there able to help me? I have a 52 reg T280 transit van. For some reason the temp gauge goes straight up to red and then the engine cuts out to protect itself. As soon as it cuts out, the van is able to be started with the temp gauge back to normal. It then goes for about another minute or two and proceeds to do the same again. All coolant levels etc are perfect. I took the van to the garage and they replaced a heat sensor on the block but it is still doing it. Are there any more sensors? Any help is appreciated.

Is it a front wheel drive?

If so, they are notorious for the splines failing on the water pump and power steering pump. The camshaft has a pulley at the back of the head which drives a belt. This belt drives the PAS pump and the water pump is splined to the back of it so is driven by the PAS pump. The splines wear out and the water pump loses drive.

The cure is a new water pump AND power steering pump as they both lose their splines at the same time. Ford have a surcharge on the pumps so they want the old units back after they have been changed...

the power steering pump is all steel , sorry but just done the water pump on my 260 swb 52 plate , it is true the ford pumps are crapy plastic and do fail , i never needed to change my pas pump as the female socket connetion that the water pump fits into when bolted together was steel, imo i would strip and inspect water pump and pas pump before ordering both parts , good luck

Just for future reference I found a ford transit forum and one guy has had the same bother as myself. It seems a wire was damaged for the temp sender. Going to have a good look tomorrow.

I was going to suggest a wiring short but DazC's post seemed very feasable. Let us know the fault

It could be wiring but I have had so many FWD Transits with this fault on the water pump PAS splines. It's a very common fault.

Both wear out. I can't recall ever seeing a plastic pump to be honest. The steel splines wears out inside the PAS pump as well as the steel splines on the water pump.

Hi all,

Found this thread via Google so thought i would bump it to save writing a new thread out.

I have a 53 transit and on the Mway last week the same thing happened to me as the OP.

I am a mobile detailer/valeter so my van is my toolbox and I am struggling to get this sorted.

Any ideas what this replacement pump will cost (So i can go to a garage armed with some info)

Many thanks
