For someone who has little experience, I would say about 1 - 1 1/2 hours

Its not a big job especially if you leave the manifolds on

as above 1 - 1 1/2 hours yes you would have to have it timed up again and I would put a new belt and tensioner on!

There is more cost effective ways of doing this. Have you actually got a reason to take it off or are u just being cautious? Personally if its just as a check i would perform a compression test. Your going to pay £40ish for a head gasket set plus the price of skimming the head.

The old saying "If it ain't broke don't fix it". Thats just my advice anyway mate

couldnt agree more, Why the hell you gonna take the head off just to check gasket??? the minute you take the head off you will need a new one not to mention new head bolts and highly recommended, new timing belt and tensioners. if you arent experiencing any symptoms of a blown head gasket then dont bother mate.
especially if you dont know what you're doing. if you get it wrong putting it back together, ie. one notch out on the timing, you could bend valves and end up in a worse position than you started.
