Hi
IMO, I think your new shells are better than old, because oil can circulate easely around ground crank.

I agree as above, and notice how all your old smooth ones have very bad signs of wear on them aswell.........while the grooved ones are like new!!!!

gentelmen i dont think the all around groove is correct.the shell with groove and the oil hole is to allow good flow into the bearings.the plain shell is located in the bearing cap where the max load is transfered to the bearing from the crank shaft due to the conrod driving downwards.
the grooved shell in cap will have less surface area
although it may work fine, i dont think it is correct
if plains are fitted in the caps from manufacture then they should be fitted in rebuild .

Thats right but isnt the pic showing mains shells, Big end shells dont usually have a groove on either side, New Mains shells usually have both shells grooved

im sure the one half grooved bearings are 2wd.

different oil pump set ups.

well if it helps its a fiesta turbo,

reason they prob look so fuked is the car had oil pump issues thast why we've had crank ground,

good old haynes says smooth in the block and grooved in the cap.

To the best of my knowledge i thought they were all grooved for the main bearings and smooth for the conrods

That's what I'd go with aswell, the axial groove bearings for oil supply on the top of the crank (least loaded bearings). Also there can't be much need for axial groove journals in the bearing caps as the oil supply is coming in from the block.

I see what u mean about the haynes manual...but then if u read the escort haynes manual it has no mention of this. The fiesta one does state CVH/PTE so im wondering if theres a mix up on that because a FRST and ERST engine are near on identical.
