Default Capri 2.8 project - yes or no??

I've been offered a 2.8 Capri. It runs but not very well. moT only ran out in March 2016.

has crusty wings, front panel, inner wings ect, a fibreglass Bonnet with aweful looking Bonnet pins that would obviously need to be replaced if I was going to do it properly.

also has had a rubbish shocker turret repair- see photo! Is this all easily sort-able!?

looks all original inside and in not bad condition.

Whats a good price?

And are they easy easy to work on- i.e. Taking engine out, re-building ect?

thanks in advance 👍

Depends on how bad the rust is IMO. I would be concerned if that much rust is visible how bad is it the further you dig. To get it back to A1 condition would be a lot of hard work. Can you pick it up for a cheap price? Have you got a decent sized garage to work on it?
They are fetching good money now but of course in top condition.
Your call but think carefully before you take the plunge.

If it was cheap enough I'd buy it and slap an mot on it, use it for a year for a bit of fun and then strip it and restore it. I'd only personally get involved if I had a decent sized garage/workshop to do it in

Don't bid much, it is not far from scrap. I paid Ł1200 for a 205 gti that was much better than this. I would be more of a mind that "I will save it"

Start at low at Ł500 and go from there, personally wouldn't pay any more than 2k.

Get it bought and give it a go rust doesn't look that bad for a Capri get the welder out and get stuck in, if it doesn't work out break it, don't see enough capris on the road.
Tried to buy a brooklands local to me, been sat on a drive since I was a kid under a tarp, knocked on the door 20 years later and I'd missed it by two weeks, sold it, bugger

That's a basket case fella. A couple of things you should consider is the parts like many older Fords these days are getting hard to find. You've mentioned a dogey front panel which are going for around the Ł600 mark not to mention front wings ! Fuel tanks are like rocking horse poo. On the plus side it looks like an early 4 speed which folks like but unless the car has some sort of sentimental value it's just a breaker.

Hope this helps

That does not look too bad and it's a long way from being a basket case more like an easy project if it's not too rotten underneath

Its an early 5 speed with shark grey interior, you can get tanks made in alloy now for Ł400, id say looking at it, it isn't too bad and definitely worth saving too good too break, unless its rotten underneath. Much worst 2.8's than that are fetching Ł2k now so this could be a good buy if the price is right.

The op needs to get it up on a ramp to have a good look at how bad the rust is. As we all know when Ford built these back in the day rust proofing was virtually unheard of.
I would want to be certain it can be saved before I would buy it.

Thanks for all the replies

im taking it to work before the end of the week and il have a proper look at how bad it is on a ramp.

The owner has been keeping an eye on eBay, I think he knows it would make around Ł3k. Not sure I would want to give that much for it- but the restored ones fetch 10k plus so I'm not sure if it's too dear or not...

Like you've said get it on the ramp and have a good look, I'm sure if it has negative points underneath you'll get a better price so long as it's not completely rotten, I'd be wanting it less than 3k looking at it without getting underneath but for a Capri it looks pretty good to be honest and a good interior.

You could end up spending close to the Ł10k if it is really bad. I think Ł3k is to much for it. You could save money if you can do all the welding, paintwork and engine rebuild your self but if you have to get it done by a restoration company the bills will mount up very quickly.

They're still Ł500 cars to me

But like everything old Ford related, prices for even ropey Mk3 Capris have gone mental.

Back int day when all my mates had most of the variants and engine sizes I really didnt like Capri's .
The only one I liked was my mums mates E plate 2.8 special which she bought brand new . I always just thought as they were old hat .

strangely now as I am older I find them more appealing

Plus theres something about this one that I cant quite put my finger on . . . . . . . .

Tbh if you could get a well done restored one for 10k I'd be tempted to go down that route as that white one looks like a rot box tbh.

The closest I got before was RAC 322W on a black sunbeam I had .

lol. Ł500, the thing would break for easy Ł2k. Maybe 10 years ago, iv go a 3.0s that I paid Ł180 for, a 2.8 turbo 4 speed that was Ł1500 and is mint, a 1.6 laser that cost me Ł160, but that was 10+ years ago, like everything else old ford wise the prices have rocketed, Ł2k now gets u a ropey 1.6 laser that's just about got an mot, 2.8 rust buckets much worst than this one fetch Ł2k. Its a shame as capris have always been affordable in comparison with over priced mk1/2 escorts but now are getting out of reach too.

I used to pay peanuts for capris in the late 90s/early 2000s. Paid ÂŁ150 for a 2.8i special that was seriously clean. Was happy when I got ÂŁ250 for it and made ÂŁ100 profit lol

I drove it up the road today, actually drove very well. No
noises at all really. Pulled like a train, loads of torque and very sideways on roundabouts.

It has nice history and 80,000 miles, only bad
thing on paper is 12 owners. Is that an issue?

after driving it I want it even more!!

Depends on your budget really, how much are you willing to spend in total for a good restoration? If for example you can buy a very similar car in relatively good nick for say Ł5.5k I certainly wouldn't want to be paying Ł2k for this one, after you've thrown Ł3k at it it'll still need even more work, so financially it doesn't make sense. I'd pay Ł1200 max for this, or if he has a price start by offering him 50-60% of his number.

So the engine and gearbox seem strong which is good. If you dont have to spend money on a rebuild that would save a lot of money. Once you get it up on the ramp you should be able to see exactly how bad the rust is and make your mind up what you want to do.
You were game driving it hard around some roundabouts, with the amount of rot in the bodywork rather you than me!!

I didn't say I drove it hard. It lost traction at 10-15mph...
