OK, time for an update, though there isn't much to report.

I know most have seen the pic of the failed turbo, but as the pic isn't on this thread, I thought I ought to put it here....

Name: TurboFooked001.jpg
Views: 198
Size: 82.4 KB

Basically, it looks like the entire back-end of the turbo dropped off and went down the exhaust. I certainly heard something tinkling in the exhaust while it was still running. The turbo has now been inspected and it is pretty much as expected, 'beyond economical repair', so I have to take that as a kick in the bollocks and carry on. It's OK though as I only have about £1400 in that turbo.

So, there the car has sat since with me having NO motivation. It's in my garage and the idea of pulling it apart just doesn't excite me, but still, I had planned to tackle it over Xmas. Unfortunately, I got hit pretty hard with this shitty flu-bug and that ended that plan.

However, Wednesday, I took it on. I removed the head and the sump and after an initial inspection, everything looks OK. In any case, the engine is coming out for a strip-down/inspection/rebuild anyway. Seems funny really as that will be the second time it's been in bits and it's still only done 8000 miles since being built originally!

Also, another inner CV gaitor decided to blow itself to pieces on the Top Speed run (this is fairly normal for top speed runs), so there is CV grease everywhere! I have that to clear up, which will be easier with the engine out of the way. I think the Heater Matrix needs sorting too. So, lots of manky jobs to do and I'm really excited!! LOL.

So, onward!!

To be honest, I'm amazed. I can't really say for sure until I get it back on the road as I only drove it for the one day, but I don't recall even hearing or thinking about the screamer!! So, yes, it looks like it's made a big difference.

Right, I've finally made some progress, not alot but SOME!! LOL.

Much to my disgust, I finally decided to tackle removing the engine on Sunday. The car is in my garage, so didn't have the benefit of luxury workshop and tools to work in, so finding the motivation was hard.

Anyway, the fucking thing fought me all the way (I haven't got an engine crane etc), but finally I had the engine and gearbox out and next day took it all to work.

Today, I stripped it all down in about half and hour, then spent about 2 hours cleaning the block out VERY thoroughly and re-painting it. Upon thorough inspection, there is no damage from the turbo failure, I did find a huge chunk of the bearing carrier in the oil drain hose and lots of bits in the sump, but amazingly, the bores are perfect and untouched. The bearings still look like they did the day we fitted them, but I renewed the Big-end Bearings anyway. So, today, I managed to get most of the bottom end internals back together, the sump repainted and I am gradually working through all the bits, cleaning them and refitting them as I go.

The Tubular Manifold is off to the Engineers again tonight for a minor design revision, nothing serious, but I am taking this opportunity to tackle all the little odd's and end's. There is also some changed planned for the Plenum. It was nice to run it with the new manifolds on, even if only for a short time as this enabled me to expose any weaknesses in the design and now I can sort them. Nothing serious, I'd more say improvements.

I want the get the engine all back together with all the ancillaries back on it, before I get the car to work as I want to tidy the engine bay a bit, but don't want it in our way as we always have alot of cars in.

So, that's it for now, but I'm chuffed as I didn't think I would find the motivation to do this yet.

Just a minor update, spent all day today stripping the head out and rebuilding it. It's run another cam off (these are becoming as frequent as oil changes), so looks like another cam will be on the cards. LOL.

I also had a stud break off on the Inlet side and managed to sort that, along with a full overhaul and finally lapped the valves in. They need a little more work yet, but hopefully all is good. There are some changes planned for the Inlet Plenum, will take pics when there is some progress to show.

I do really want to take it to Central Day, but there is lots to do.

Yes, everythings been checked. This cam has actually lasted reasonably well and just one lobe decided that it had given up on living. Really odd. The engine has only done 8000 miles since it was first built, it's had god-knows how many oil changes (about 10 at least I would think) and has been in bits twice since! This time its had all new bearings along with being completely stripped. I don't think I could have done more to prevent premature wear. The cam gets run in as you are supposed to and I use Graphogen on the lobes on first start up.

I just don't know the answer.

To think that my cure for wiping out CVH cams before at high revs was to fit a Newman cam, and yet you've wiped one of those out!

I knew they had bad oil pressure and, a generally heavy valve-train setup but wiping out an iron-chilled cam is pretty good going. Sure Ken would like to see that for a closer look.

What Revs do you pull as well Christian as he's working on a new follower design. PM me if you want lol

Off topic - Mark - Do you remember Kirstin Taylor's RST that you did? That was a seriously clean RS Turbo, with a lovely engine to match!

Dave, I know about the new developments and am anxiously waiting for further news on that. I only need 7400rpm tops.

The cam that has just failed had utterly ruined a lobe and lifter, but only one. I had to drop the lifter out the bottom!! Ken should have the cam by now, so will see what he says.

From what he told me, it will be a hardened cam, as per the ones used with the solid lifters, but with a hydraulic insert so no need for setting the valve clearance or adjusting loose followers, or the tappy noise if you get it slightly wrong.

Obviously the only drawback could be for really high-revving engines where the lifter would pump up and cause it to miss.

Sounds interesting and we're keen to get hold of one to test when it's ready…

Considering how far we rev our turbo'd engines, compared to highly tuned N/A, I'm not worried about using Hydraulics and I am right on Newmans case to sort me one out as soon as they are ready. My engine will be back together in the next few days (though I do have other work to do on the car prior to it being ready).
