Project Lolvo
Whether or not this will be of interest on here I do not know, but I can't be the only one to appreciate a fast Volvo
So I've been trying to find a tidy late spec 940 Turbo for a long time, but everything that came up was usually auto or an early one with the 4 speed + overdrive and weaker internals.
Kind of gave up looking and instead kept an eye out for a 140/240/740 to convert to turbo spec, a friend of a friend turned up trumps with a complete B230FK Redblock including M90 box, loom, hoses and everything else for £300!
So that's now on a stand, I have a set of 38mm exhaust valves to go in with double valve springs and a lairy cam from a Swedish tuning company called KG Trimning. I'll also be throwing in a set of rods, however the pistons have been known to withstand over 500bhp.
This then cropped up not far from me for £500, there's marks all over it but very solid, adds to the sleeper appeal!

So long, heavy old A/C!

Knocked up this downpipe flange for the T34.

Wheezy TD04 13C on the left, T34 with 360 degree bearing on the right!
Slight issue though, I need to clock the T34 as the compressor outlet points right at the manifold, is it possible to do? You can with the Mitsubishi turbos as people run fwd T5 turbos on 940's by doing that.

Got the intercooler knocked up and put in place yesterday, need to make 2 more brackets for the top though.

Everything was resting in place so excuse the wonkiness lol.
So spec wise for the time being, we're pretty much bolting bits to the lump that's in it, and see how long before it bends a rod, then throw the built lump in.
4 pots are a must, possibly from later R model or whatever I come across as we can always knock up some brackets, possibly convert the front struts to coilovers, unsure on the rears as they're a separate spring/damper unit.

I can't make my mind up on what style of wheels to go for though, part of me wants to keep it understated and go with some banded steels, but there's another part that thinks a motorsport style would work? It's got to be a 90's sort of wheel though, something like Zenders?
Also if you haven't seen it before, check out Bamse's Turbo Underpants on YouTube, they're Finnish but have good English subtitles, plus his builds are mental.

I've just bought a 96 940 turbo to use the engine and gearbox in another project,
The rest will be getting scrapped in couple weeks, if you need any bits off it drop me a pm before it goes to the scrap heap, they can be hard to find in the scrappies these days

Those boys definitely know how to build Volvo's!
It's definitely got to be low, unfortunately suspension kits are nigh on non existent so got to get creative there!
Bet that was pokey! I do like the little 340/360's.
Interesting, will do some digging on that!
Cheers dude, what interior is in it?

Its got gray/ black half leather with heated fronts, i'll get you some pics tomorrow and pm them to you if you like, i'm sure the interior is quite tidy
Just don't annoy him
My mate went to get some stuff and whilst he was there a guy came in after a headlight.
Owner went out and climbed over loads of cars and got the light off finally and came back to the buyer, showed it to the buyer who looked it over and said its just what he wanted and how much. Owner told him price and the buyer responded, i'm not paying that its not worth it etc and proper kicked off saying the guy was ripping him off. Owner turned around and chucked the light on the floor, told the guy to f* off and get out of there.

Yes mate, keep meaning to go for a nosey up there!

Didn"t want to teach you how to suck eggs!!!!
Had heard the guy can be a bit funny as my mate said when he was asking about parts he didn"t want to know. But one of the guys had told him they had had lots of dreamers in and he was sick of it.
Matey went back a while later with the car and the guy couldn"t be more helpful...

Does seem to be hit and miss from what I've heard! There was a 16V engine down there not long back for peanuts, they usually fetch top dollar!
Not much progress, sorting out mounting mounting the turbo at the moment and figuring out suspension. Front struts are integral to the hubs so coilovers are dear, might convert standard struts yet.

Bit of a change of plan though, the T34 that I was sold as being in good condition needs a rebuild, so bought myself a Holset HY35 last night
Definitely not going to be the turbo that's the limiting factor now! I've figured a way for coilovers at the front using GAZ 40 way adjustable inserts and mk2 escort coilover conversion thread/spring rests, www.classicswede.com do height adjustable rear seats and again GAZ adjustable struts, all in it should cost around £400 for the parts so that's a winner as a set of coilover front struts alone are £700!
Managed to lose a chaps number that had a set of wheels I was after
HY35W, good for just about 600bhp!
Having trouble rotating this turbo too so going to send it off for someone else to do for me. Started pulling the spare engine down ready for some shiny parts, still after a set of light blue or greys if anyone knows of some?

So, even more bad news in regards of turbos, I'm never buying second hand turbos again!
Sent the Holset off for rotation of the housings, got a phone call saying the join between the core and turbine housing was badly corroded and there was no guarantee it would re seal, also that they had bathed it over the weekend to try free up some of the corrosion and when they took it out, part of the compressor wheel broke away!

Anyway, managed to source a brand new HY35 for a good price!

Quite a size compared to the standard unit.
Shocks turned up too..

Started converting the legs to coilovers too, springs should turn up on Monday so I can get some top hats made to suit the standard top mounts.

Trying to figure out what to do for rear springs as no one does universal 5" springs, might have to get some custom made. I'm using a height adjustable seat for the back.
Decided to ditch the cast manifold and go tubular to free up some ponies, I'm also thinking about chopping up the spare inlet I've got and making my own plenum, but that might be for another time.
So much for sticking to a budget

My mates built a few of these for the rear springs give David at winchfield engineering in finchamsted a call I know he has coilovers on both of his volvos front and rear , he will have any bits you need if you get stuck
Update time!
Little bit of an update, I've promised a lotta people that it will see the road by summer so I need to pull my finger out a bit!
Originally I was just going to get some tophats machined up and use the standard rubber top mounts to sit them in and then do the camber mod, but I figured I'd just do it proper and as ClassicSwede now stock adjustable camber plates, I snapped a set up.

Might pull them apart and anodize them, unsure yet.
Stripped/blasted/painted the lower arms, which considering we only have a real fine glass bead in the cabinet worked very well indeed! Standard issue poly bushes of course.

Eventually got sick of seeing the turbo laying around, so got my arse into gear and figured out where I wanted it mounting, the first Holset I got turned to be a dud one too, learned my lesson buying second hand turbos, don't! Sourced a brand new HY35W for a very good price, got the fancy anti surge compressor housing too.
So with a bit of jigging/hanging, got my collector tacked into place.

Bit of progress..

It soon got heavy so had to chock it up!

And all tacked up now, will start welding it this week once I get my two-way regulator back from work to purge it.

Once it's welded I've got drill into the side of the collector to then weld in a piece for the external wastegate.

They're tough old engines, other than a set of forged rods it'll be stock block.
