Cool GTI van project

Hi all, another newb, another van project, I been reading through a lot van projects on here and I thought I'd give it a go myself, with a lot of help from some prop e'er Ford heads,
My plan is to change the 1.8 n/a engine to a 1.8 td endura de with intercooler, and a few tweaks, lowering, GTI kit all round, back doors welded and made into single lift door and finally a respray, Matt black is my first choice.

So if any one can offer advice or tips they will be greatly appreciated

Thanks for looking

my van as it is, only work its had done is total sill replacement inner middle and outer.
GTI donor car, i'll be using the doors, with wiring ,white clocks, dash, skirts which will need moddin, and a few other bits and bobs.TD doner car, just gunna drop the engine(1.8 TD Endure de without incooler) box and running gear out , the rest will be scrap which get me back the cost of the car, Ł160. i have an intercooler for it now plus im hoping to get an fmic for it of a friend. more pics to come when i start taking out the lump.

i need to point out im trying to do all this with a budget of Ł500, so far its cost me
Ł160 for TD donor car
Ł25 for intercooler
Ł25 service kit for TD engine with oil (bargain )
Ł18 for new cambelt
have been quoted Ł70 for a new clutch kit(which it so needs)
so total is Ł298 @TM

Just viewed this but wont show pics! Upload to a photobucket account. Select photo > Highlight URL > in your reply click on the upload photo button > paste.....job done. I have to say though, photobucket has changed! It used to have page's of pics at a time which you could select the url easy and copy/paste. Now you have to select the individual picture opening another window then copy the link. My computers running slow so this new way of doing it is a right pain the ass!

like the idea of keeping to a budget.

I love the look of rs/gti vans, mk6 vans are getting a rare sight in the roads up here , well apart from absolute rotters that have about 3 mot'd left before the impending doom of a crusher if there lucky !

ive had the van about 3 years now and she's a proper little work horse, i'll still be using it for work but at the same time ive always wanted to mod it up, its gunna be an ongoing process, engine first, lowered, skirt kit, weld up the back doors and make them into an up and over but im told this could be a problem due to the weight( any tips on this would great) and finally a paint job(looking to go matt black sleeper style), ive already seen one exactly how i want mine, and she looked frecking awesome, if i see it again i'll get pics. looking to change the engine(minirotty pikey style) in about 2 weeks times, but in the mean time i be taking the TD out and giving it a good clean and service ready to drop in the van. maybe in the future i'll swap the engine again for something with a bit more tarmac churning power, holly shit don't i go on ha ha ha.

Could you not butcher the tailgate once welded? Cut away what's not really needed. Leave the frame around the outside, cut away everything in the middle then fit braces crossover fashion? Or get as fibreglass tailgate made, light as you like.

I had thoughts on making the doors lighter, and also using struts from a bigger van, there must be struts that can handle the weight of 2 back doors welded together, as for fiberglass, I'm on a budget can't afford Ł175 for a single door. I need to go scraping for parts, see what I can come you with.

Haha yeah Rex is a good lad!

Is yours the red one you use it for work too?

Now I know your Rex's family, if I have any spare van stuff I'll send it your way.

As Rex helped me with my brakes on my van when my brain wasn't working quite right one week.

Yeap mines the red one, it's in one of pics at coleys place, I was working next door on some decking. Lol.

I've been out today looking for struts to support the weight of the back doors and I found some on a galaxy, 630n (about 80kg) they can lift, might even beable to use the hinges with a bit of moddin.

How did you lengthen your side skirts on the van, I've got 1 pair at the mo but will I need another to chop up and graft on.or is there another way?

Hi there ianc, what you looking to get for the springs and coilovers, I will say I'm trying to do this project on a tight budget, so the cheaper I can get things the better it will be.

Well, the TD is in and running, thanks to my Lil bro Rex and Mr Cole, both very patient and understanding. Just a few bits to snag, rev counters not working, which is strange because we used the same clocks from the donor car. And the fan is permanently on, as is the the fan/glowplug light. Apart from that she runs 10 times better than the old lump, 0 to 60 is now achievable. Lol.

Front lowering springs will fit from any mk5/mk6 mate.

The back of mines dropped by about 100mm or more mate, it was silly high before I flipped the beam.

Cool, will have to get looking for springs then, Rex tells me you made new mounting blocks to raise the back end because it was sooooo low, my main concern is the load bias valve(I think that's what it's called lol), will it still work when the axle is flipped?

I did mate but piece of piss to od.

The valve does still work you just have to adjust it, wind the nut out iirc, as if you don't the bugger locks up at the back when breaking as it thinks you have a full load lol

Oh Cool, have you any pics of the mounts? Good news on the valve, thought I was gunna have to take it off all together,

I'm gunna have a go at moding a rear bumper and extending the side skirts myself using fibre glass and expanding foam as a mould, I like doing shit like that, lol
