Finally got the car home on friday night, I borrowed a towcar (thanks Jim!) and left for middlesex at 6pm to fetch it (from Mike's garage where it has sat since I first bought it) and we were home again by about 1am, which wasnt bad going considering the snow and ice at the moment, thats literally the first chance Ive had to go and fetch it so far.

This is how it is at the moment, after Lesley decided to give it a quick clean as it was dirty from being transported back (bonnet is off so she could clean in the bay as well).

Spec of it as Ive bought it is (i'll get some pics of the various bits in a few months when we start work on it as Ive got the blue clio, the red corsa and my mid engined nova all to do some work on before I get round to starting this project):

Suspension:
Gaz front coilovers and Gaz adjustable rear shocks (still retains torsion bar)
172 bottom arms to give greatly increased track (not just more than the standard valver but even more than the williams)
AST top mounts

Brakes:
Comb Brake pedal box with remote bias adjustment, im not particuarly happy with how this is fitted though in terms of how the pedals sit and im not convinced the adjuster is working correctly and there seems to be excess play in the brake pedal, so will remove inspect and refit but at least its fundamentally there and other than a couple of brake lines that need redoing (one looks like it will chaiffe at one point and one I'd like to reroute slghtly) its all a relatively tidy instalation.
172 front calipers

Engine:
No

Transmission:
No

Interior:
172 dash more or less fitted, just needs a bit of tidying up and things like a set of dials adding and a heater putting back into it
Rollcage
Some ridiculously over engineered seat mounts that appear to have been nicked from the forth bridge in an attempt to pay homage to the late Fred Dibnah.
Manual winder windows
Manual winder sunroof (currently minus the actual winder)
Some basic hardboard or similar door cards in black which look nice and tidy
Ive got old some corbaeu seats for it but I cant remember the name of them, not fitted these yet though

Exterior:
"Liquid gold" yellow paintjob, in reasonable condition, few stone chips and a couple of other marks, but more than tidy enough for its intended purpose as a trackday hack
Carbon bonnet, few marks on it and the resin has gone cloudy in places as is typical of this sort of thing, the car has now become effectionately known as "cloudy" for this reason, I guess that will kind of work on two levels if it does end up as a Clio powered by an Audi engine as is the current plan of attack engine wise, lol

Updates to follow in a few months time when work commences, just thought I would start the thread doing now though just so that it ends up as a timeline later on etc

Target will only be around 250-300bhp.
Im not interested in doing a big power build as I dont want to end up in a situation where the straightline speed is high enough that I start needing to move away from 15" wheels in order to fit big enough brakes to stop the thing for corners, partly because 15" tyres are cheaply available and partly just in terms of controlling the unspring weight and also because I like how mk1 clios drive on 15" wheels.

Yeah it is definately one of the better mk1 shells left, most of them have gone very badly rustwise in various places.

This one has had the arches done but they were done well

Lol, will sort one out.

They appear to be 2" square box with about a 3mm wall thickness and about 1.5 foot long each, fuck knows how much weight it adds, good couple of KG though I though think!

This one owes me 1250 including the few bits that came with it like the brakes and suspension and cage and fetching it home, I think that was a bargain though TBH

I'd guess 500 quid in general is a good ballpark for a very tidy clio mk1 shell but TBH you just dont see them for sale as no one breaks a car with a tidy shell generally!

sorry mate, not taken any pics at all, looks to be in quite well other than the top bit has been cut for the cage and cut in the centre to allow it to go in as 2 halves, think its on standad fixings but not sure, didnt really pay any attention TBH
Should think it needs 172 loom in as well (mine has that, you can see the difference in the engine bay plastic bit where the loom goes) for the switches etc I would imagine.

yeah totally.. got a mk1 phase 2 clio, basic spec but the shell is pretty damn mint - no rust to be seen underneath when it was on the lift at the MOT station..

pretty tempted to drop an F7R in it..

Dan, F7R has been great fun in my blue clio, been much quicker on track than people expect it to be as they just handle SO well.

I'm still going to be using that one this year till the yellow one is finished in fact, just want a little more poke and also want a tidier car as my blue one was always done as cheaply and as quickly as possible as a properly disposable trackday car, but this one we want to take our time with and do a nice job on it.
Finding a cage secondhand is a bit of a bitch though, still after one for the blue car as well, ironically it was the cage I wanted from this car that got me looking at it, I never intended to buy as much of it as I did!

Gary, not looked for an engine seriously yet as not starting the project till summer probably now, but the 225 lumps seem quite thin on the ground, how come your mate has a few?

TBH I think im going to go Audi powered now though as they seem like a better option.

I'd like to see under 1:20 round combe from it, I think that is realistic if I can get it to handle as well as the blue one as Ive done under 1:25 in that with under 170bhp so with more power I'll easily be able to take 5 seconds out just on the bigger straights as Ive only been hitting 105mph tops on the main straight in the blue one!
If I can hit 130mph+ instead it should raise my average speed down the straight from about 90 to about 110, and that will save me over 3.5 seconds just on that one straight I reckon!

Will keep an ear out but your best bet is to put a wanted add on the clio mk1 forum mate:

http://clio16valver.co.uk/board/viewforum.php?f=40

you can use your existing mounts and box etc, its a very straightfoward swap, the engines are only different internally.

Looks at home in the bay TBH

Exhaust manifold / turbo / downpipe clearance might be an issue though if using the standard setup, wont know till I try I guess!

Got the blue Clio and my corsa for cheap and cheerful fun, this one I want to be a lot quicker and I don't care about losing money as it's fun, I lose money doing trackdays or going snowboarding or out on the piss etc that's what I work to be able to afford

hopefully effect of the extra weight will be minimal and power delivery should be fine if I map the boost request tables well enough.

10 at moment
Four at my parents, couple at a mates farm, couple in storage, one in our workshop and one at my place.

Tidy shell, went cheap enough too! id be tempted to stick a vag 20vt lump & box in myself as the renault gearboxes are too weak for decent power..

Have been looking into the conversion a bit more and people are generally saying that the VAG boxes are heavy and dont have a nice change.

So im considering a PG1 B4BPQ box instead now, from a lotus exige, or some similar rover derivative of it (the exige one has a quaiffe as standard so would be the ideal starting point)

Martin Hadland on here (reyland motorsport) does a very neat conversion that allows it to be fitted trivially to the engine, and means you can run the equal length shaft kit from the rover too.

Looks like a reasonable way of getting a reasoanably light (36KG apparently) and fairly strong gearbox with a good choice of ratios and a good choice of diff options into my car.

Will keep looking into other options as well though, so this isnt meant to be a final decision, but figured its worth recording stuff like this in case it interests anyone else on here.

He also gave me this stark warning about why not to use the standard rods, this is from a 260bhp engine that didnt even have a raised rev limit:

Looking good!

If for some reason you don't go the VAG route, my mate Justin that had the turbo'd valver (You sent him an oil restrictor) has broke the car after he melted a piston. Still has the Williams engine sat about that has forged rods, turbo grind cams/verniers etc, not sure how many of the pistons were reusable though

Didn't realise you know Justin.
Yeah I knew he broke the car as I bought his gearbox.

Definately won't be going down any route that puts me on an older renualt gearbox, if I do anything Renault it would be the newer engine instead.

Lol, gotta be a kg of metal in them per side I reckon! but TBH its not enough of a saving (considering where the weight is, middle of car and on the floor) to justify the effort in removing them (they're very well welded into place) so have just modified the punto frames that the seats Ive bought came on to fit onto these bars and left them in place.

chip if it was me i would have built the reno 2.0 up to 200 bhp there about would be a hoot and lighter ! so you are going to need to get the suspension sorted right to get that to handle any where near what it would na tbh
