Car started its life somewhere in 1986. And since 1996 hasn't seens it's yearly mot checkup anymore. After that unknown but probably stripped of it's interiour and driven as trackday car. Was used in some competition events in the first half of zero's (2000-2005) Untill in 2006 at some night, i spotted the sales add on the internet! Called the guy who sold the sierra to hang to it for just a little longer, and the next morning, notified work i was taking the day of, and got myself in a transit with cartrailer to have a look at the other end of the netherlands. After a quick cup a coffee with the owner, time to have a look at the car. Bodywise the car was/is in bad shape. Real ugly dent at the rear, (Suposenly during a raceday, some chick hit the car whilst it was parked in a pitlane. The whole rear end was dented, and bend down.) Further the car is stripped of it's interiour, fresh rebuild standardish engine. And pukka Intrax suspension setup. Diy front arb, (really huge) rs500ish intercooler,fresh rebuild t3 turbo, mongoose exhaust, quickshift. bucketseat, bolt-in rollcage, etc. Fell in love,
Payed for it, and trailerd the fresh gain home.







Took here to some trackdays and the cars handles like a cart. I was very impressed! But ofcourse not
quick enough, and next thing was a 044pump, chip,t34 and greys. Now the car flies even quicker around the track. However she looks really bad. Ugly paint job, and full of dents. During winterseason 2007 the car got tucked away, and a restoration came in mind, but time,money, and other priorities stood in the way to get car out of its storage. Coming april there is this trackday in france which i'll be attending.. So time to pick up the resto project! Got an expert to have some advice regards restoring the body of the car, but after a quick look, he nodded a bit, and told me it would be far easier, cheaper, and quicker to reshell the car with another sierra i bought for donor parts. The idea of binning an original shell got me doubting for a while. But april i getting nearer, so the Reshell project has started.

Stripping the donor car (2liter laser)was good fun and went pretty swift. But, more and more rust showed up Been busy with cutting and welding the rusted spots.

Whilst busy with welding, why not seamweld the lot? So took out the scrapers and powertooled wirebrushes. Removing the kit was a time consuming job, but got there. A collegue of mine who helps working on the car, turns out to have some pretty good welding skills with the mig/mag. So i let him do the welding stuff. Result: pretty good i think



seams at the rear turrets have Big gaps, since turrets do get some stess on them, decided to weld those trough.

Got myself a new pair of top adustable mounts from Intrax, and comes along with weldingplates. One thing get me worrying tough. When I have these fitted. The car will actually be raised by about 2,5-3cm! My suspension is adjustable, but factory won't recommend ajusting that much. So I'm thinking of cutting out a pair strut tops from another sierra, and weld these up the originals to compensate on the hight. From quick measure the bonnet won't cath. Few pics beneath

Yep, won't cut out the whole top, but leave about 2-2,5cm of meat
then weld the plate from underneath to it.
(Hoping to get it done/sorted by the weekend)

 

Finally time for an update. In the meantime been busy with getting the rollcage in. Cutting the struts for the camberplates. drilling holes for brake-bias peddlebox ...

Back from the bodyshop: Since the car has to leave coming sunday to france for trackday on monday everything go's a bit in a rush right now (work from 8 till 18 and then the project till somewhere in the nights ) I've never prepped a car for painting before, and de result was pretty ok. I tought. With the fresh paint on it, it's pretty visable where little dents are But then again, its a tracktoy and not for concours, and it looks so much better as the previous car Really glad with the result. Got some pics with it. Abeit not te greatest but i get some better ones soon.

Yesterday made a lot of progress. Got all the plumbing done. electricity all wired up. But then the problems started.... Since i wanted a bit of a better drive, i binned the l6 ecu and bought a l8 item and last winter got myself a closed loop chip. Got the board cut to fit. Fitted the chip, added the lambda signal. And swapped the outer tps wires.
Contact on, and the injectors allready started clicking, amal valve clicking like mad, coil makes funny noises. And the fuelpump is working funny. Still gave a go start, but no start....
The least to say we were absolutely suprised Went back to the wiring, and dubble checked all sensors, feeds and earth..... Cannot find anything faulty.
So after the lost/dubblechecked hours, i tought to give it a try with the l6 ecu, and swapped the outer tps again. And everything is normal, and started directly. Althoug a bit rough
Did i forget anything to mod to change to l8?

Hi, last year i was busy rebuilding my trackday car. Had a deadline to make. Got there partially. The new orderd lexan windows did not arrive in time. (Got lost in the mail due the mess the iceland volcano made) the
front shock absorbers didnt fit, and the skirts&bspoilers were not fitted..
L8 computer didnt work, and found out there is a little crack in the exhausthousing of the turbo..
But besides that the trackday was good fun. Came back put the car on a ramp and sat there ever since. Been busy with a lot of things but not the car. However last weekend i picked up the project.

Last weekend, took the side windows and rear window out. (were fitted with selftapping screws) And since i got new lexan windows, i going to do this different.
Going to use rivit nuts with stainless allen bolts.
Took a 3cm edge to paint black (so you can not see the previous holes, dirt, and sealer)

took 3cm masking of the sides and sanded it a little


and along came a spraypaint can (mattblack)


result? i'll have a look tonight

 

Got the masking off, and the result is pretty neat. first i had to drill several size 7 holes for the rivnuts.

The car is still on the standard 15" wheels. Pretty oke, but on track, the brakes could be better. So bigger wheels will be needed and 17" wheels will have to do. whilst going bigger i might aswell go wider, So..
next up: resizing/cutting the rear arches to acommedate 240/610 R17 slicks

standard arch will not suport the bigger wheels


so to make it fit, its more that just rolling the arch. Went up to cut up the rear inner arch to make more clearance. ( a bit more work then aspected :-( )


next week no time for the car. but soon more..

All looking good mate but is it me but have you just had it painted and now your going to have to do more welding in the arch

 

it's not just you. This is not really the most eficient way to do things.
Last year the car had to drive for a trackday, and the car was rushed ready. And back then the bigger wheels were in distand mind for this car, but didn't realise fitting them would be a big issue. However i wont be welding and repainting now. A collegue advised me to bond it together, and that should be pretty strong aswell. I'll be using Hercuseal Sealer 302.

 

Excellent Project but I can't help thinking with all the welding you're doing why didn't you stick with the original Cossie shell?

to be honest, i did had some 2nd thinking myself, but then i was already busy, so kept going on this one. (the old shell was really knackerd, but still in storage)

 

Got the cut-up rear arches bonded and sprayed the arch with anti-stonechip paint


Fitted the rear spoiler, which was previously fitted with selftapping screws. Thought to do it different/better with rivnuts.




Bonded the rear skirts to the car

 

Worked way to the front now, ( i did cut up quite some metal away on these arches
and fitted the skirt a little higher so at the front 235/610R17 et33 wheels/slicks will fit.


received rebuild front shock absorbers


wrapped the downpipe since there is no heatshield with car anymore


fitted the front (replica)bumper




a bit dusty over time but, coming all together now

And had some worrying with fitting the rl7wheels

so i fitted some longer studs

Also the previous owner had a diy non adjustable front arb fitted which, well actually could not bend/flex really. The diameter of the bar is about 6cm and the arms are huge stainless arms

So i decided to order a proper group a bladed antirollbar set from a reputable seller on here. So anctuously waiting for the courrier to show up
