Series 2 engine bay tidy up....updated 30/03/07 It runs!!!!!
Having seen the standard of some of the other series 2's on here I really thought it was about time I got to work on mine. At the moment i'm concentrating on the engine bay and front wheel arches. I'll do underneath at a later date.
This is how the engine bay looked before I sarted work on it. It was quite clean but there are a few areas of rot/rust that need sorting, the usual thing, battery tray, top of the front cross member etc.
Start of the stripdown.
Header tank, heater box and water pipes removed.
Radiator, intercooler, turbo, lights removed etc..
Off side wheel arch
This is what it looked like before doing anything to it, coverd in waxoil (seemed like a good idea at the time) and 15 years worth of dirt.
This is how it looks now. With all the dirt and wax removed and in primer.
Near side wheel arch
Here's the other side, once again covered thick in waxoil
And here it is with all the wax and rubbish removed. Can't wait to underneath....not
And this is what it looks like now in primer, although there's some rot to sort out above the gearbox end plate.
This is how the car looks at the moment. Hopefully it should be going into the bodyshop next week to have the few area's of rot sorted out and the engine bay and front panel resprayed.
So my next task is to start cleaning all the bits which I have removed. I was aiming to have it all back together by mid to late april but i'm starting to doubt it.

And here it is after just under 5 hours of cleaning and polishing

Thanks for the kind comments, it's much appreciated.
The car went into the bodyshop at the end of last week. I'll post more pics of it when I get it back.
In the meantime i've been cleaning and re-painting the front calipers.
Here they were before:
And here they are after, with new hoses fitted. Just got to fit new bleed screws when they arrive.
Also gave the master cylinder a quick paint as well.
Doing the metering unit next, so i'll post more pics when that's done.

Went and had a look at the car in the bodyshop last week and it's comming along nicely. Should be back with me in a couple of weeks
In the mean time i've been busy working on the metering unit and a couple of other bits. Sorry about the quality of the pics.
Before
Here's the unit after being cleaned up and painted along with new fittings
The lower casting after being cleaned and painted
And here it is rebuilt. Just got to get the two fuel lines to the press-regulator refinished now.
I've also cleaned and painted the fuel accumulator, but forgot to take a before picture
And yesterday I gave the throttle housing and inlet manifold a quick clean and re-polish. I also managed to strip a thread out of the manifold while stripping it down, so that's something else to sort as well now

Thanks for the comments guys.
The metering unit didn't take all that long to do, it was a brand new unit fitted to the car about 5 years ago so it was still in quite good condition.

Update:
I finally got the car back on Friday Really happy with how its turned out. Here's some pics of whats been done:
Front near side floor
before
Rot cut out on the inside and outside
All welded up on the out side
And here it is sealed and painted on the outside
and the inside
As can be seen the other side was much the same
From the inside
Here's some pics of the battery tray. It turned out to be a lot worse than first appeared.
This is as it was
Here it is with the tray removed, can't believe how bad it was underneath
Here it is with the new panel welded in and with the tray about to be welded in
And finally painted up
Here are some pics of the engine bay
o/s inner wing before
After
Front crossmember.
Before
After
Front bumper mount.
Before
Here it is repaired, along with some pictures of the inner arches, i'll post some more of these when the suspensions stripped out.
Not done a great deal to the car yet. Just refitted the washer jets and lines, side repeater wiring and fuel filter clamp.
New washer bottle just about ready to fit, just got to tape the wires.
But my next task is to sort this little lot out

Yeah, really glad to have it back It was away for 7 weeks.
The list price for the washer bottle is just over Ł13 +vat (part no 1059605)
Although it's slightly different to the original. It has an oval filler, not round, so you also need a new cap and it also has an extra mounting hole on the bottom of it. There is a hole on the car for this so you also need an extra bolt - part no 6554729
and an expansion nut - part no 6549354
Cheers
Andy

Small update:
I don't seem to be making much progress at the minute. The loom is now all retaped and has been fitted back into the car, along with the wiper motor, header tank and washer bottle.
I've now started to remove the front suspension from the car to send for powder coating.
That's about it so far. Next i'm going to remove the gearbox mounts, etc so they can also be powder coated.
