you will have to let the sealer fully dry before you stone guard as the sealer will shrink a little as it dries & it will look crap .stone guard the next day will be ok .

decided that we are going to attempt to paint the inside between me and Dave and probably mask up the cage to spray it separate and maybe even in stages to ensure a good finish,

one of the biggest problems i noticed when etch priming this time using the proper gravity fed spray gun was the cup got in the way of everything and i kept bumping it into what i had just painted and you would have the same problem with a syphon cup so to solve all that i treated myself to this today thanks to a bit of early birthday cash to spend at the machine mart vat free day

2litre pressurized paint feed pot and a new clarke super pro 1.4mm paint gun




hopefully this with make life a lot easier doing all the funny angles and tight areas that the cage has and also will hold enough paint to do the lot without having to stop and fill up again mid paint, i have never used one of these and nor has Dave but for the sake of £76 i think it will make life a LOT easier having no cup etc and no loss of paint feed even if holding the gun upside down etc, i will be doing the high build primer myself hopefully this weekend coming so i will let you know how i get on

Also today the girlfriend treated me to one of these beauty's as an early birthday pressie as wanted to save a few quid on it at the machine mart vat free day 2day even though my bday isn't for another week and a bit as they only have them every few months.

No probs now lifting the car high enough for the wrc sill stands or dolly's etc with a max lift of 800mm and i still have my alloy racing jack for when this is overkill or needed to lift to get the big jack under

Anybody else ever used one of these?

Think of extending the pipes to about 4-5 meters rather than the 1.8 so you don't have to have the paint pot so close or would that affect the paint flow? It should'nt though as pressure will remain the same

You would get a pressure drop i think but i dont know how much and if it would affect the gun.

I have used these before spraying truck/ trailer chassis"s but the pot was larger and longer pipes. Just try it with longer pipes nothing ventured nothing gained.Was looking at one of those jacks in machine mart on saturday nice bit of kit..

marc i got the same set up but with a 1.8 tip for doing a paint job at work ,they are very good for the money the idea of the paint pot only having a 1.8mtr hose is that you are supposed to hang the pot on the belt for your air fed mask you will be surprised how much paint will be in the hose ,its quiet a lot so going for a longer hose is not a good idea .as for cleaning the gun after do not soak it for any thing longer than ten mins as what looks like anodized alloy is actually paint & i found out the hard way as most not all came off so it now looks shit
as for pressure do not put to much pressure in the pot as it will come out like a hose pipe & the knob on the bottom of the gun is to regulate air pressure at the cap the rest is same as a conventional gun .any more queries just ask

The plan was to high build primer the inside today but its pissing it down here in essex

Not so much of a problem with the painting as its in the garage and we heat it all up with a space heater but i have to take everything out the garage when painting, mainly the tool chest and welder and im running out of space lol so i will let you know what happens later.....

The gun and pot are good and let's you get in all the hard to reach places but the fact I am crap at spraying let it down, it's got a good coat of high build on it now but as I said the whole thing is like sand paper from overspray so the whole lot needs rubbing down inside, AHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!

I will leave it to the Pro's in future but alot of it was me not be able to get the gun right, it had far too much pressure obviously even though the pot was set to the right pressure but never mind, just got to rub it all down and let Dave do the proper painting.

Yep you need the right AFR Did you do the whole inside in one go (cage, inner panels + roof, and floor)? That could cause a lot of over spray.

Once I got overspray on one part I though f*ck it I may as well give everything a good priming and rub it all down so it's gonna take time but plan on it being ready to paint this coming weekend,

looks ok to me tbh, DONT USE fast hardener when painting it, use nornal hardener, if you paint the boot floor then move to the front floor the paint on the boot will be setting an over spray will make it look rought if you can understand me?

Cheers for the comments guys, yeah its not that bad and it rubs down easy at least so no big deal compared to what its taken to get to this stage so far lol

as for the hardner i will suggest that to dave as we are using fast hardner with the paint so that could be something to consider, also i dont think the other 2 litres i had made up is going to be enough for the inside! so may have to get another before the weekend, what you you painters think? i didnt cover everything with 2 litres of etch when i done that

I admit mate that is 100% true but i also admit i don't have enough money in one lump to pay the painter what he wants to do the job otherwise i would happily hand it over and get it back sprayed perfect inside and out, but i dont mind having a go at these things and dont mind if they don't turn out 100% perfect because it saves money and doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

All my money went on paying a proper team to build a proper shell as that's the center point of the whole build and the part that counts and if that was crap or done poorly then the car would be crap full stop.

me and Dave did say that might be the best option so will decide at some point this week,

yes but now, you have to buy more paint than you really need, and depending on how you value your own time - is alot more work on the cards for you.

but, all experiance counts, and if it had come out how you wanted you might have saved a few quid, if you had to do it again, have you now learned how to do it right ?

I haven't got to repaint anything mark I just have to rub it down smooth before the top coat goes on, the extra paint is because with all the bars making up the cage I though maybe 2 litres won't cover it all!

so far nothing has been wasted and I haven't bought more than has been needed,

Definitely learned a few things from it and I will paint again but for a first attempt I bit off a bit more than I could chew lol

I think its better to have some paint left over than running out 3/4 of the way round the car I also think you will waste a lot paint in overspray on the roll cage so its a good call to have more than you need

You would have to rub the high build anyway, it's just that you have some rough to rub too, no big deal really. I definately think breaking it down into 2 or 3 parts is best, cage/roof+sides/floor. You can then spin it at all angles to do the cage, have it up side down for the roof and finally do the floor with it the right way up. You should also get a decent flow that way too on the big flat surfaces.

Anyway, its as much about trying some thing and learning as you go as it is about bolting all the pre-assembled and pre painted parts together. Doesnt matter if you want to learn to do it your self and put up with all the doubters and all the shit that people give, you decide what way you want to get there. At the end of the day you are the one who went out there and got it to this stage and so far you dont look like the kind of guy to give up on it

awsome project mk if i wasnt so far away id offer to come up bring my guns and do some painting for you , as said i wouldnt try hit it in one 2 maby 3 parts , extra time maskin and painting can save more time and money in the long run ,

The car is now off the spit and back on the dolly's as it was easier to get in the car to reach parts and you can't do that on the spit, also when you keep turning it small bits of dust and dirt and debri fall out of hidden places and stick to the paint so I will keep it the right way up to paint,

As it all needs rubbing down anyway I will rub down and prep the cage and do that first as it's gonna give the most overspray and then I can let it dry and mask off before hitting the restnof the inside,

Not done any updates lately as there hasn't been much to tell or show but i did do a few bits on the car today as there a few pics so thought id do a small update,

engine wise i have the block back now that has been long studded so that is ready for when the engine gets put together next year.

Also after Dave and myself sorting the underside of the car and prep and priming the inside, due to how busy i am with work and how cold its got now the rest of the car is going to be painted at the body shop, its provisionally booked in for the end of January as he is too busy to take it on before then.

With the car now booked in to the bodyshop my attention has been focused on sorting everything that needs to be sorted before it goes in for paint, So........

i got all the panels back on the car and roughly lined up and decided i wanted to freshen up the look of the car with the facelift front and rear lights so these has now been fitted,

Also the front bumper and wings had all the vent/mesh area's filled over so today i got busy cutting them all out as i definatly don't want to be doing this after its been painted lol. I also cut out the grill section of the bumper and fitted a front grill and with the new lights and cut out area's i think it looks perfect and is resmbling a car again

And to finish of the update i picked up some fibreglass door cards from ebay, these were available in full carbon but were £520 a pair and i got these for £90 so i can live without carbon, lol

the tops of the doorcard have been flocked to stop the glare which is a good idea as they are quite shiny -





These will have the door handle and grab handle fitted when i get round to fitting them for good after its all painted up, while i was there i also cut out the side impact bars from the doors saving 4.8kg acording to BLAIRM who did the same on his st race car and weighed them so that saves a little

Just saving for paintwork now so not much else to report,
