205's are great, if I could have find a non rotten one for the low budget I had, I would have happily got one instead of the clio.

Mind you, for what it owes me now, I could have bought a decent 205 already done, typical, lol

Its still pretty cheap, but its certainly not the original 500 quid budget anymore, new engine and box and brakes cost me about 600 quid.

I reckon my total spend is still under 2K though, and considering that includes 2 sets of tyres, I really cant complain.

Might go for some throttle bodies next though, which will probably be another 600-800 even if I pikey a set of bike ones on and use cheap management.

Just took another step away from being cheap, lol

Set of webber alpha throttle bodies, for 600 quid.

Next thing will be Mtech V4 management and a new loom to go with the throttle bodies.

So over a grand all in.

Really dont know why I did that, it wont make enough difference to justify it im sure

Indeed, these will do nothing at all to alleviate the lag it suffers from.

Regretting it already and I havent even fitted them yet, I should have just found a turbo engine for it and done it properly!

I just cant resist buying stuff like this, even though I dont really want them, i have some form of illness, lol

get them sold, keep the ecu and get a 17 turbo volvo engine. Itll bolt straight in being a renault block and got to be good for more than the TBd valver motor.

Those engines dont rev very well, and the torque will break my gearbox if I try and get power out of it in the midrange.
doing it with the TB's means that at least I can just buy a snotty old box for 30 quid like I have just done and still get a good few trackdays out of it.

Yeah, makes sense I suppose! Love the fact that you're using an expensive tuning method to avoid torque, to save money in the long term....

FPMSL, yes that does sound a bit arse backwards.

If I had more time, what I think would be the "correct" way to go is an audi 20VT engine and box, but it then becomes an involved project, not something I can do in a weekend comfomrtable like converting it to throttle bodies and mapping it.

Indeed, I started with something that was fun straight away, and will continue to be fun along the way, I dont mind a small amount of ongoing costs (ok I'll take a now that 1500 quid on an engine + TBs + management isnt small in the context of a 500 quid trackday car ) providing I have ongoing enjoyment from it too.

Ive already done 3 trackdays in it and numerous nights of "enthusiastic" road driving and feel like Ive had my moneys worth already from the money its cost me so far (excluding the new bits not yet fitted) so Im quite happy to keep drawing a line under it financially and saying "those bits have now paid for themselves in terms of the fun I have already had" and then spending a bit more money.
I'll probably have spent a total of 3-4K on it by the end of next year, which people would say I could have bought a scooby for, but they would be missing the point that I couldnt have bought one for that and had all the use out of it along the way with no risk of big repair bills that I will have had from the clio.

Makes sense, altho I guess Id have taken an anal interest in lowering my laptimes through my own driving and just spend all the money on doing as many days as possible.

Youe you could get a scooby for 4k, but not only could you not have used it meantime, a 4k scooby wont be on decent suspension, brakes etc.

Whens the clio getting a cage?

With things like fading brakes though, its not very satisfying doing that, the only way I got a 1:28 for example was to not use the brakes at all for the lap before, its frustrating having things that arent working consistantly.

I know you will then say "but what about the extra power, thats not needed" but when you are on a day where there are so many cars with similar power to weight ratios, but MUCH slower corner speeds than me, I am in a situation where my laptimes are dictated too much by their behaviour when Im not allowed to overtake on the corners and physically cant on the straights.
At least now with the small increase in power I will be able to get past "normal" cars and only be held up for several laps at a time far more infrequently, its not much fun following a slow car around for 3 laps unable to pass!

Youe you could get a scooby for 4k, but not only could you not have used it meantime, a 4k scooby wont be on decent suspension, brakes etc.
Indeed

Whens the clio getting a cage?
I have no plans for a cage currently, I believe that the car has sufficient protection from the bodyshell to protect me acceptably against any accident its likely to be involved in.
The sort of accident I will have in it is going to be a 40mph whack into armco designed to take such a hit and it already has some crumple zones as its a relatively modern car.
I would say my most significant risk of death driving it is during the journey to and from the racetrack as it doesnt have sufficient protection from lorries etc, but thats true of any road going car.
Dont think thats me saying I wont get hurt on track, there is a chance I will, but its merely unlikely enough that I dont consider it to be of concern, much like my attitide to leaving my house to venture onto a motorway in the audi, there is still a risk but I feel its an acceptable one.

This isnt a 400bhp westy after all, its a car with 6 pillar construction and moderate power output.

TBH I was a little dissapointed with it as a valver, as im from a background of astra GTE 16vs and other stuff with redtop engines, but now its got the williams, im really pleased with it

baaaarrrrppppppppp!

About 170bhp now, dont think i'll do anymore to the engine to get more, as will stop it being budget if I start doing a proper engine build for it

172bhp now, still fucking slow in the grand scheme of things but a bit more bearable that it was.

we also welded some extra bracing onto the front frame to replace metal cut out when moving the rad, and added a jacking point so I can get both front wheels off the ground more easily.

Got loads to do still.

Annoyingly im stuck in london till friday, and then only going to have a few hours before I leave, so all going to be a bit "last minute motorsport" as usual but hopefully Gary will pop round to help out as well.

We're planning on getting up to the hotel about 8pm or so if all goes well, when you guys getting up there?

Not good, I have no idea when we will be at the hotel, was going to take half a day on friday and go up to see Matt & Lorraine and join them at Santa Pod for a little while, but I have had the holiday declined due to too many staff off on that day

If you wanted a cheap 172bhp Clio, wouldn't it have been cheaper and a hell of a lot less hassle to buy a rough-round-the-edges-but-usable Clio 172?!

Looks fit for purpose though!

Not really as the mk1 are lighter, and I just prefer them anyway.

Plus this is cheaper in the long run to get replacement engines for and replacement shells etc.

Well, the inlet conversion has gone well, car drives nicely now, still seems to make similar sort of power as when I took them off (which must be down to about standard williams power now with how tired the engine is!) but the oil leaks that the engine has always had seem to have got a bit worse.

Got black flagged at bedford for the leak as I was sat idling in the queue for about 20 mins and when I moved forward had left a small puddle, oops.

So looks like if I want to use it on track again the engine is going to need to come out for a freshen up.

Need to decide if its worth sticking with it or just using the red corsa till the yellow clio is done, as Im short on both time and money for doing engine builds etc at the moment.

Hmm, decisions decisions!

p.s
Thread for the inlet conversion I did recently here:

Well, an oil leak at bedford last weekend made my mind up for me, as obviously no good having a trackday car that is dripping oil and hence not allowed on track!

So we yanked the engine and box out this weekend ready for a quick freshen up with new rings and bearings and new gasket etc and the mrs has cleaned up the bay a bit and I blasted the worst of the scratches with a rattle can.

Only got a few hours a week that I can be over at the workshop for a while due to loads of work commitments but the plan is to take engine apart next weekend, rebuild it weekend after, fit it weekend after, get running weekend after, map and run in weekend after, trackday at Combe weekend after.

Not sure that's all going to go to plan, but at least there is a plan, lol

Engine bay looks ok at a glance now at least, although this will never be a concours car obviously as it only exists to be abused on track.

Quick Reply: Budget track tool, renault clio 16v, williams powered, doing engine rebuild now
