Budget track tool, renault clio 16v, williams powered, doing engine rebuild now

Will bear it in mind, im in no rush to change the engine though TBH, the point of this car is to have something cheap and simple that doesnt take too much of my time away from my other projects and I can just chuck it round a track and not be too bothered about being the fastest, instead of going out in Rob's astra and playing with martin hadland, I had just as much fun playing with dougie's 2.0 16v cavalier and neil in the fast ford puma.

Well as shown, they dont have to be expensive to be good fun
Mine owes me about 500 quid for the car itself including repairing it and the seats/harnesses
Only thing on top of that was the tyres, extra wheels and tax, about another 500 quid.
So about a grand or so all in ready to trackday

Yeah about that.
I was able to keep pace with slightly more powerful cars on the straights though, just cause it doesnt weigh a lot, especially now its all stripped out.
If I keep it longer term I will add some more power, but Ive got my mini to do soon and once that is finished I'll probably just get rid of the clio as there wont be any point owning both really.
although that said, I might just keep the clio for doing scatters and 12 cars as its even more fun down a country lane than it is on track, as it doesnt feel underwpoered at all on a muddy b road!

Its absolutely spot on mate.
The brakes you have to be a little less agressive with than if they were massive otherwise you can put too much heat into them, but they still work ok, and the handling really is superb, its hard to remember when driving it how little it cost.
If I spend another grand on it next year, on a set of 406 coupe brakes and a 172 engine and box, I think it will surprise the fuck out of most people.
although Im kind of thinking I need to stick to the original plan of just leave it alone and to crack on with my mini instead.

Calibra is at specky's awaiting a V6 and is going to be my tow car for the nova.
The V8 is going into an omega instead, but needs workshop finished first, we have road scalpings and a digger hopefully arriving this weekend so we can shore up the ground and crack on with the building work, so currently its looking reasonable the workshop will be done this summer allowing me to do the omega and/or mini this winter.

Workshop sounds good,Ive got all that to come this autumn

Yeah got the engine, specky has found a set of 3.0 cams for it, only thing holding it up currently is that the oil pump was damaged when the breakers removed the engine from the car, and I cant find one at the moment (not buying a new one, would cost as much as the engine did)
Dougie is meant to be sorting one out, so might give him a nudge by email actually while I think of it!

Hoping it will, ive got till tomorrow off to try and get it sorted, problem I have at the moment is I havent got a cambelt for it and it needs to be done before the engine goes in as you cant really do it in the car, so going to depend how early tomorrow morning I can get hold of one.
Also depends on if the engine is any good or not of course, as I havent heard it running so dont know if I have bought a good one or not yet!

New engine is sat in now although not plumbed or wired or properly bolted up yet as the heavens opened and the bit of tarp we were working under just wasnt enough to keep the rain out so we've packed in for the day a couple of hours early (going out for a meal later for a bird's birthday so was going to have to stop by about 7 anyway to get cleaned up).
Have also finished mocking up the new brake mounting brackets for my pikey big brake conversion, its using 406 1.8 16v calipers, some home made brackets and a set of 306 gti-6 283mm vented disks, not positive its going to work yet as havent got the disks and have just been working off where I think they'll sit, but should be ok.
Costing 64 quid in total for the big brake conversion, so if it doesnt work, never mind.
Got some work to do during the days this week but will hopefully get some time in the evenings to work on it as at least for once im not working 200 miles away from home.

Williams engine is in and running now, its great, SO much nicer power delivery than the peaky 1.8 (mine allegedly had cams so that probably made it worse)
"New" (135K, lol) gearbox works too, hoping that my third attempt to do combe in the clio will be the first one that doesnt kill a box!
Brakes are getting there, have made up some brackets to mount some pug 283 disks, its pulling a bit to one side on the test drive I just got in from, but hoping that just needs bleeding a bit better as I was in a rush when I did it, so will do so in the morning before I leave for combe

Well it took a right beating today!
Engine was pulling far better than the old valver motor, and the gearbox is still in one piece unlike the last 2 trackdays I did in it where I kill one both times.
My pikey homemade big brakes worked well and pulled up nice and straight, but I suffered a bit of fade as the only pads I could find at the last minute were standard road ones.
Overall though, had a cracking day out, makes the last week of effort doing the engine conversion, new box, brake conversion all seem worthwhile
Couple of pics of it in action:
TRIPOD!
LOL

The reason for 406 brakes, is my mate had some 406 calipers lieing around, and we thought it might be fun to try and fit them to the clio with some big disks, so I mocked up some wooden brackets, found a disk that was the right size, and got the brackets made in steel.
Total cost of conversion 74 quid

Looks like fun on track in that, well done.

I wish you had told me a fucking valver starter motor doesnt fit it though when you said to use my ancilleries, it would have saved me a day of my life when I turned it over and it chewed up the ring gear and had to take it out and fit a new bloody flywheel, lol
Well pleased with the engine though mate
